There are lots of characters, seemingly unrelated, to keep track of. My favorite line so far: “Behind it a pile of old rags with a hat on top organized itself into a man, albeit a scruffy one,” I like the man that talks to pigs and I wonder what happened to the woman in the boat? How did her life go so terribly wrong so fast? I suppose, like the tributaries and streams of the river, these characters will all come back together to conclude the story. I’m still loving it, though I’m ready to understand at least something about the man and little girl.
I’m excited to see how the story unfolds with the Armstrongs. They both seem to have something special to them. I really think this could be said for those who work with animals and the land. You learn to rely on communication and understand the world in ways other than just with words.
I see that it’s not just the farmers that have this extra sense!
Oh mercy! So many characters that I have to take notes the whole time I'm reading so that, hopefully, I can keep some of this straight! I've definitely got my eye on Rita. Something big is going to happen with her. It's certainly interesting that she's named after the patron saint of pregnant women and childbirth. I'm also interested to find out what it was that the woman whispered to Fred Heavins, as far as who the little girl looked like. By the description of Robert Armstrong, it sounded like he was "Henry Daunt of Oxford" to me.... So far I can't decide how I feel about this book. I'm absolutely loving the vivid descriptive details and the writing; however, there are SO many characters in this book!

I had to take notes too. The further I read, the easier it got though. The descriptions and details are so well done.
