ShazM | 487 comments During surveying at the start of a building project bones are found in a tunnel underneath Norwich and Dr Ruth Galloway is called to excavate them. A hole opens up in the middle of a road and a man may, or may not, have disappeared into it. A homeless woman disappears and it is suggested that she may have gone underground. It seems that there is a network of tunnels running through Norfolk's chalky landscape and there might be people living, and dying, in them.

I really love this series and think that this is one of the best. Archaeologist, university lecturer, single mother Ruth and determined northener DCI Harry Nelson are likeable characters with normal, human flaws. I enjoy the combination of historical information, crime detection and the personal lives of Ruth and Harry. The subsidiary characters, mostly the other police officers, have also grown through the series and I'm really looking forward to the next one so I can find out what happens to them.

Good review. You know a book is good when you look forward to the next book. It sounds like it has good character development.
