Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Important

*Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count. The challenge starts on Friday 1 Feb, 2019 at 7pm AEDST (Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time). To see when this is in your time zone, use this countdown

*Books must be more than 100 pages in length. If it is a Childrens book or a graphic novel, we need to verify it is more than 25,000 words on arbookfind.com.

*Your finished books need to be on your Uno shelf AND marked as "read" for them to count.

* Please make notes of how your book may count. The more options we have the better! (Letters used in UNO are Z,O,T,H,F,I,V,E,S,N,K,P and of course if another team member has read the book before. Please friend our team members!)

*For coloured cards, the cover needs to be 50% or more of the colour. You can ask us in this thread for our opinion, or use this colour tool. If in doubt, ask me or Beth as we can check it and/or take to the captains group for another opinion

* This is a social challenge, not a competitive one. We'd love to get points, but the main aim of the game is to have fun, read lots and get to know each other :)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Welcome everyone!

This is our 5th year of UNO and doesn't time fly :0
Our theme this year is mystery and Flavia deLuce is one of my favourite amateur sleuths! If you haven't read any of her books yet, then UNO is the perfect time as they have great block colours on the covers :)

I have sent you all friend requests and will PM you with the link to this thread so hopefully we will see you all soon.

As an intro, I live in Sydney, Aus with my husband and 2 boys (6 and 3) and run a business as a HR consultant. I read almost everything except Horror, and I'm not a massive Romance reader.

I look forward to playing with you all!

P.S Don't forget to create your UNO shelf if you haven't already

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 1505 comments Lisa Checking In.

Hi everyone, this is my fourth year of Uno.. and I'm busily checking what book covers I've got to match the colour cards already. Loving the mystery characters theme too.

I also live in Sydney, Aus, married Mum of 3 and Nanna of 4. And will read just about anything to fit a challenge.

Looking forward to catching up with previous team mates and meeting new ones.

PS - Thanks for the tip, Karen! The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie (Flavia de Luce, #1) by Alan Bradley is perfect for 1 Green - 1st book in the series. Found my first read for Uno.

message 10: by Beth (new)

Beth (jasonverlander) | 756 comments Beth the co-captain is here!

I think I’ve only missed one maaaybe two UNOs over the years and this is probably my favorite theme so far! Definitely will have to try out our namesakes books. :D

I live in the US with my lovely boyfriend (that sounds like every intro to Wheel or Fortune, ever) and love reading most things. Only thing I don’t really read is fantasy.

I’m excited to get to know everyone!

message 11: by Beth (new)

Beth (jasonverlander) | 756 comments And just a little bit more about me: I work as a caregiver and actives coordinator at an assisted living facility. I work the morning shift meaning I wake up at 4 am EST and get off work at 2 pm EST. I will be around a little bit during that time but moreso in the afternoons. I believe Karen and I are about opposite exactly so one of us will be available most of the time.

I absolutely love my job! I could talk about my amazing residents and the shenanigans we get up to all day long :)

I love sports and will watch anything that is on. I’m also a Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy junkie.

Oh and I love pizza

Laura Hey everyone, checking in as well. This is my 5th UNO challenge! I see some familiar and new faces.
Hi Beth; we played on the same team for the first ever UNO game.
Hi ya Sandy! Hope work is going well.
Hi Karen!

Sherri .. Uno is definitely fun!
Lisa- I haven't read anything by Bradley so looks like I might have to check out the series with you!

My shelf UNO 2019

message 14: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 336 comments Hi everyone! I'm Sandy and I live in southern California. This is my second time with this challenge - it was a lot of fun last year. I mostly read romance, but will read other genres for a challenge. I'll check through my historical romances - they often have big, colored dresses on the covers! I haven't read this author before, so I'll have to check him out.

I work as a tax preparer, so my reading this time of year depends on how busy I get. I also love Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune @Beth! I have two golden retrievers instead of kids. 😍

Hi Laura! I hope all is well in your life!

message 15: by Ankit (new)

Ankit | 4 comments Hello everybody!
I am Ankit, from India.

I am an engineering student currently in my final year of college. I love books, music and a good cup of hot masala tea!
I'm looking forward to make new friends as we go along.

Also, I'm a newbie on the UNO challenge and i am very excited!

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 1505 comments Welcome Ankit. This is a fun challenge, great to have you on the team.

message 17: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (last edited Feb 02, 2019 01:59PM) (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Hello hello hello

As we are a mixed team in terms of locations you'll find half the team on during your night and half during your day ;) Looks like Beth and I will be on alternates too, so hopefully there is always someone around to chat with or answer questions!

I know we still have a few weeks, but I've put a breakdown of our hands into message 5 for everyone. The cards we really need to make sure we cover are the Reverse and Coloured cards as they are pretty specific.
Everything else, provided you give us all the options that the book can count for (Z,O,T,H,F,I,V,E,S,N,K,P and # in series) we can track them and manoeuvre things around as required. :)

I have posted the Book Tracking Spreadsheet into message 7 and anyone can edit. So please go ahead and add in your books you intend to read and how they may fit into the cards.

Unless you are reading for a specific coloured card (or Reverse), it is best to list as many options as possible so we can slot them where they best fit later.

Speaking of coloured cards, YELLOW is the most difficult so any yellow books you have are worth reviewing to see if they match a card.
--edit-- 1 February -- we now have books for all our Feb coloured cards claimed---
As a reminder, our coloured cards are:
1 Green
2 Yellow
7 Yellow
8 Yellow
4 Blue
8 Blue
9 Red
AND we also have to duplicate 4 of them for our Wild Draw 4 cards

Oh and for those new to UNO - for Draw 2 - you don't need to read anything. All it means is that we can use one book for 2 cards. If you look at the "example" tab on our team spreadsheet it has an example in hands 2 and 3 of how draw 2 can be used

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 1505 comments Great Karen. Raring to go...

Quick Question - When reading a historical romance can "England" be used as a setting? Or does it have to be a specific place?

message 19: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Locations can get a bit tricky so I tend to use the setting as listed on goodreads. If there is nothing on GR and in the book they don’t really give specifics as to location in England then England is ok

I love the In Death series also, I'm pacing myself, I read about 5 or 6 a year. Still got a couple of years to catch up to the latest release.

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Thanks Lisa! I think the Robb book is fine (and Flavia is totes green!), but I'll take The Governess Game to the captains group

As for the In Desth series, I have book 1 sitting on my shelf from the library. It is part of my cleaning out the closet challenge to read it because it has been on my TBR for so long :o

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments I just came across this in the book suggestions from GR
Dear Mrs. Bird by A.J. Pearce
works for yellow 8 if anyone is interested.

I will read The Secret Science of Magic by Melissa Keil which works for 8 Blue (just from flicking pages looking at character names! You never know, there could be a 4 in there too)

message 29: by Sara (new)

Sara Frie | 14 comments Hi team! I'm so excited to be doing the uno challenge for the first time!

I'm a part time Virtual Administrative Assistant for an incredible cleaning company based out of New York. I am located in New Mexico, southwestern US.

I am a mother of five and wife of an active duty United States Airman.

I am really just now finding my favorite genre and I think it may be historical fiction. :)

I'm also quite a fan of HF :)

message 31: by Laura (new)

Laura I'll read this one for 2 Yellow- Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt

27,000+ words on Arbookfind

added to the planning s/sheet

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 1505 comments Hi Sara, you sound like a busy lady. Welcome.

Karen, another thing I should know... but have forgotten. Can two different readers use the same book for different tasks? If so, Kindred in Death (In Death, #29) by J.D. Robb works for Yellow 2 (Characters Troy Trueheart and Trina and 8 (Eve Dallas) so Beth and I can both read it to knock out two tasks?

yes, absolutely. and also - we have to duplicate four of our coloured cards so no problems reading the same book :)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 1505 comments Laura's got yellow 2 so that solves the problem above.

message 37: by Sara (new)

Sara Frie | 14 comments I'd like to read Thunderhead by Neal Shusterman. it is the 2nd book in the series. so, I would put this on our spreadsheet as yellow or? sorry, just don't want to do it wrong. I have read all the rules and will be reviewing them again. lol.

Is it this cover Thunderhead (Arc of a Scythe #2) by Neal Shusterman ? Because I think that would be more green.
However, the book works for many letters including Reverse as I have read it :)
How about I'll pop it onto our tracking s/sheet so you can see how it works?

I finished Michael Grant's Front Lines trilogy series tonight! It was awesome. I recommend; though maybe not for UNO as they are big books! Lol... not that you need another 3 books to add to your tbr if you have a self imposed ban!

Just checking in! This is my second UNO challenge and I'm really looking forward to getting started :)
