Uno FAQ
Some of the Key Rules/Info *Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count. The countdown timer is in the above post.
*Books must be more than 100 pages in length. If the main page genre says childrens book or a graphic novel, we need to verify it is more than 25,000 words on arbookfind.com.
*Your finished books need to be on your Uno shelf AND marked as "read" for them to count.
* Please make notes of how your book may count. It is wonderful if a book has lots of options. I find myself all year long noticing names, etc., and thinking "that would count for a 5". :)
*For color cards, the cover needs to be 50% or more of the color. We can check it with tineye (a color analyzer) but if we wonder about the results, we can ask in the captains group. We can also use our eyes and common sense :)
* This is a social challenge, not a competitive one. We'd love to get all possible points, but even if we do, another team might win - it is all in the luck of the cards :) It's a 'win' if we all have fun, get some good books read, and enjoy each other's company.
February Color Cards Green 1 - M will read O is for Outlaw

Hello team! I'm so excited to be playing with all of you! I see some familiar names (yay!) and some new ones (also yay!).We'll have some time to get to know each other a bit before the challenge officially starts. For your first introduction, maybe just tell us a bit about yourself and whatever else you want to say :)
My name is Suzanne. I live in Idaho (which is super cold right now) and teach math at the college here. I love to read, and I love challenges - I've found so many good books from participating in team challenges.
I will check-in and write more later, but I have to leave in about 30 minutes and just wanted to get our thread open first :)
Oh I forgot to say - I'll put up a planning thread later today that everyone can use . And we will talk more about strategy in the next couple of weeks. But really, the main strategy is to have fun and to read. We can fit books pretty much anywhere in our cards. :)
Hi I’m Kelly. I live up in the north of New Zealand, where it’s been pretty hot so far! I have a very active three year old who keeps me on my toes. This is my first time doing the uno challenge and I’m really looking forward to it. My favourite books are urban fantasy, paranormal, true crime, and biography but I’ll read almost anything except for traditional cowboy, and most high fantasy (can’t do Lord of the Rings!). Can’t wait to get started!
Hi Kelly! I hope you enjoy the Uno challenge - it was my very first Goodreads challenge a few years ago, and got me hooked. In fact, I THINK KayLynn was my team captain - small world :)
It’s like squaring the circle haha. I’m really looking forward to it. I’m guessing our hands are there in the spreadsheet?? I’ve been looking at them to see what books I already have that might fit.
Yes, our hands are there - I'm going to put a planning sheet up soon for everyone to play with. The books that seem to be the trickiest for Uno are the colored cover ones - those for sure need to be planned. I feel like for the other cards if everyone chooses books they want to read, we can juggle and fit them in somewhere, since lots of books will fit multiple cards. And thank goodness, we don't really have to do things in order as far as reading - just have everything read by the end of the month.
I’m so excited!! I can’t wait for this to start!! I’ll have to look at my (very full) book case to see if there’s anything that fits. We appear to have similar taste in books so doing a reverse card won’t be a problem at this end, that’s for sure!
Good! Reverses can be really hard if everyone likes different things (although sometimes you find a really good book that way). Honestly, I think the hardest part of Uno is waiting for it to get started.
I put our planning sheet here: Planning SheetAnyone would would like to, feel free to enter books you want to read in February, etc. (and no pressure if you change your mind). Also, keep an eye out for books with colored covers. I entered our color cards books at the top, and if you have one that will fit, that you know you will read in February, feel free to claim it :)
I haven’t found any coloured covers...yet. I’m on my phone so I can’t edit the document, but I’ll take one of the reverse cards to start with if no one else wants it! I’ll just put off reading “Second Grave on the Left” by Darynda Jones (off your list Suzanne!) until the first. Or...I could get out the third book and that would count since you read that too haha. I’ll edit once I’m on my laptop if that’s ok.
Oh, I can also cover Skip (author), 1 (first in series), 5 (5th in series), and 7 (7th in series) so I can totally wait until everyone is done choosing their cards for this hand!!
Sounds great! Those are all great options! 5 and 7 can be tricky too. We can fill as many hands at once as we desire, so just choose a few books you want to read and we will get them in. It's a super flexible challenge, so like if you read a book early in the month that works for 3 and reverse, we may end up moving it around. But it all gets used.
Hello everyone!I am M from Vancouver BC. I am really excited to be doing Uno this time around. I have a pile of books that I have made for a TBR to cover almost everything. So if you need me to fill a spot I can do that
Hello M - it is so good to have you on the team! You were so helpful covering needs in wheel-a-thon - and I was super happy to see you on our team list :)
I don’t own books - I library - and I currently have about 50 books out to red, so I’ll work at slotting them in as/when we need. And spend some quality time tracking down any books that might work for the coloured cards when they come up.
Suzanne wrote: "Hello M - it is so good to have you on the team! You were so helpful covering needs in wheel-a-thon - and I was super happy to see you on our team list :)"I am glad to see you again. This is going to be fun. I might be stalking everyone's Read shelf to cover the 2 Reverse cards in our first hand.
Hi everyone! I’m Laila. I live in the Chicago area. This is one of my favorite team challenges and I’ve done it every year except last, when I had practically no time to read. I’ve done this challenge with both Suzanne and Des before. Suzanne is an awesome captain! We’re in great hands with her =)I have a very active 21-month-old son who keeps me busy, so audiobooks have become my friend. I love romance books of any genre, but I’m willing to read anything if we need a spot covered. One of my favorite things about challenges is just going through my TBR list and trying to find books to fit tasks.
Hi Laila! Wow I remember when he was born - time goes by so quickly! I agree - audiobooks are great - hands free reading!
Hello, team!! Sorry I'm a bit late to the party. I've had a busy week. I'm excited to be on a team with Suzanne and Laila! I think it was Uno that brought us together for the first time several years ago. I hope to cultivate friendships that last just as long with those of you I haven't seen before! :)So, my name is Dessiree, but Des is easier to spell/remember. :P I live in Northwest Arkansas with my husband of 11 1/2 years. I am currently recovering from a major abdominal surgery, which is why I may take just a bit longer in my responses the next week or 2. I'm off work until March to recover, so I'm excited to have so much time dedicated to reading.
I'll start going through my TBR and library catalog and do some planning. That is my absolute favorite part of Uno. :D
Also, Laila, I can not believe he's almost 2! Where did the time go? It feels like last month you were about to have him! :O
Des, Quick healing to you. I know what it is like being laid up. I am currently nursing a broken ankle. I am loving the planning part of this. I now have a table full of books beside my chair waiting to be read.
I love finding books that fit challenges too - and it's awesome we will go into February well prepared!I've sent messages to our team members, and I think we will meet the other two soon.
I also checked, and it looks like lots of the Maisie Dobbs books are at my library. I read the first one a couple of years ago, and I'll need to pick up at least one more during the challenge. Has anyone else read the series? And from our picture above, I guess it is also a show, but I haven't seen it.
Hey! I'm KayLynn....and I was in fact Suzanne's team captain years ago! So excited to team with her again! I live in Utah, USA. It's winter here. It's freaking freezing. Hmmm...I love books, music and coffee all the things. And I have a 4 year old who is my heart and drives me crazy at the same time.
I read some of everything and have a massive TBR pile, so I'm sure I can find some books to fit into whatever we need.
I've got the Maisie Dobbs books on my list!I also think I have a book for the Red 4 card in hand 8...Third Grave Dead Ahead. The protagonist's love interest is called Reyes Farrow. Which starts with an F. And the cover is TOTALLY red. Would that work?
I hope everyone had or is having a great day! I am going to track our color cards (which can be tricky to find) in post #6, but I'll copy the post here too. Thanks for already claiming a few!February Color Cards
Green 1 - M will read O is for Outlaw
Green 5
Yellow 3 - Kelly will read Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
Yellow 7 - Suzanne will read Forever in Blue
Red 4 - Kelly will read Third Grave Dead Ahead
Blue 6 - M has a book
Blue 1 - Des will read The Selection
Then the Wild Draw 4s have to match one of the above cards
Wild Draw 4 - Kelly can match Blue 1 (if needed)
Wild Draw 4 - Laila can match yellow 3 (HP and the cursed Child)
Wild Draw 4
A nice resource is below (although you don't have to read one of these books)
Red Covers
Blue Covers
Green Covers
Yellow Covers
I can do Yellow 3 - Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (H - character/title and I got it from the Goodreads link posted haha).
Here’s a question - for Wild Draw 4, can we read the same book someone else has put down for the same card? Because I have The Selection in my TBR pile right now (Blue 1), but I would end up reading it before she would. Is that ok? Does this even make sense???
Suzanne wrote: "I hope everyone had or is having a great day! I am going to track our color cards (which can be tricky to find) in post #6, but I'll copy the post here too. Thanks for already claiming a few!Febr..."
I can cover the Blue 6 card or a wild card for Blue 1, Red 4, or Yellow 3.
Kelly wrote: "Here’s a question - for Wild Draw 4, can we read the same book someone else has put down for the same card? Because I have The Selection in my TBR pile right now (Blue 1), but I would end up readin..."Yes any order is fine, and you can definitely read the same book.
M wrote: "Suzanne wrote: "I hope everyone had or is having a great day! I am going to track our color cards (which can be tricky to find) in post #6, but I'll copy the post here too. Thanks for already claim..."Nice! I'll put you for blue 6 for now, and if you decide you want to change to one of the wild cards, that's just fine too!
Thanks Kelly - I'll put that down for now - and then we can switch around if we need. And Laila, Melissa and KayLynn, if you want to get in on all the color cover fun, feel free to speak up :) But also no pressure!
I suspect the second half of February we'll have a mini-challenge too and get to find lots more books. Those are always fun :)
Yeah that’s fine! I don’t want to steal spots from anyone else, and I know I’ve already nabbed two like some sort of greedy book thief haha.
Suzanne wrote: "Oh oops - it's Blue 5 - is that what you meant? Or would you rather do one of the wild cards?"It says we have Blue 6 on the Team Spreadsheet and Blue 5 on the planning sheet.
Oh thanks M! I'm sure I just mistyped it - thank goodness for multiple pairs of eyes. I'll correct all the planning stuff and write you down for Blue 6 :)And Kelly - I love picking books too - I think (and I suspect lots of people do too) that finding books that fit is one of the best parts of challenges!
