I loved this book because, like so much else Verne writes, it's totally bananapants. Exploring caverns left by an extinct volcano may be believable but the prehistoric animals duking it out in a giant sea in an enormous cavern with no supports for the ceiling lit by some unexplained electrical phenomenon? Not so much. But that off the walls totally unbelievable nonsense is what makes reading Verne such an exciting trip!

Verne was an excellent author of adventure stories.

I think I’m going to appropriate the word ‘bananapants’! I can think of all sorts of situations where it would be apt!!
