Anybody? What in God's name happens in the end.I know the kid gets let off as not guilty but what happens to the 2 women???? Do they get accused of the murder? Do they get off scot free? I DETEST up in the air endings. Makes me hate the whole damn book.So again what happens to the 2 women?

I took it as they deicide that they could never be together because they just remind themselves of the murder. That they both realize that they had an amazing love for each other, but they could never get back to that level.
I also think that they get off from the murder since the Inspector said that they got their guy and even though they didn't get him on this they'll get him on something else.

I think Frances letting Lillian go in the cab alone was symbolic of her not wanting to continue with her in a romantic sense. Lilian came back, but it was for nothing. She wasn't the Lilian that Frances was originally so obsessed with claiming. The prize wasn't worth the fight, so to speak. And they could never be care-free or happy after all that had transpired.

I also don't believe Lilian's interest in Frances was genuine. She used her as a way out of her marriage. So there's no real relationship going forwards. They part ways, relieved to walk away with their lives, they close that chapter and let the memory of it fade as they go back to being strangers.

That's my take, anyway.
