Glenn McCarthy | 3 comments I had this book read to me by a teacher when I was about 11 (1988). I only have vague fragments, but I remember that I loved it.

There was a boy who always though he was different to the others in the "tribe" around him, and he counted differently. For some reason they built a boat using Roman wood working tools one of the men had. The boat sailed somewhere, they were on a beach waiting for the tide I think, and they played a game like cricket using sticks and stones. And the boy overheard a fisherman counting in the same way he did, which must have been a memory from his childhood before he was taken maybe?

Sorry it's not much, but that's about all I remember of it.

SBC (essbeecee) | 1594 comments Could it be something by Rosemary Sutcliff? She wrote a lot of historical fiction for children set in pre- and post-Roman times in the UK.

Glenn McCarthy | 3 comments Thanks, that was definitely a good lead. I went through the plot summary of all her books, and while there was some similar stuff, I didn't find the one I am looking for.

Glenn McCarthy | 3 comments Thanks, more good stuff. Unfortunately I still didn't find it. Maybe it was just too long ago, and I have a distorted memory of it. But I'll keep looking. The book lists are quite neat, I didn't know about those.
