Candace, thanks for the review, and I'm glad you liked it.
This seems to be one of the higher-rated "historical fiction" books on GR.
Anyone else read this yet? I wasn't particularly interested in a book about Alaska but since this writer is so exceptional, I read it. Harrowing, engrossing, fascinating, feminist, and I learned so much about Alaska that I'll always have a special place in my heart for its people.
I also read the book and I enjoyed it. I liked the way the women of the community came together and help the mother and the daughter the best they could. Also liked how they showed how domestic abuse affects a woman (and men) and the children. The book is beautifully written. In addition, I liked the take on some of the reasons why people choose to live in Alaska and take on the wilderness and the isolation.

But what an adventure it was to live vicariously through these characters. :)
