Candace, thanks for the review, and I'm glad you liked it.

This seems to be one of the higher-rated "historical fiction" books on GR.

Candace (candywilliams) | 491 comments Anyone else read this yet? I wasn't particularly interested in a book about Alaska but since this writer is so exceptional, I read it. Harrowing, engrossing, fascinating, feminist, and I learned so much about Alaska that I'll always have a special place in my heart for its people.

Laura (twlightzonebookworm) | 8 comments I also read the book and I enjoyed it. I liked the way the women of the community came together and help the mother and the daughter the best they could. Also liked how they showed how domestic abuse affects a woman (and men) and the children. The book is beautifully written. In addition, I liked the take on some of the reasons why people choose to live in Alaska and take on the wilderness and the isolation.

I felt the same way! I found myself wondering if I could possibly live in that part of the world voluntarily. Um, nope. But what an adventure it was to live vicariously through these characters. :)
