So here is another man who behaves quite generously, yet he says it is all because of his pride and wanting to be well known. They seem quite common in fiction, lol. I think the implication is that he’s not really generous, because if he were then he would do it from pure motives. Not sure I agree with that, though.

I am starting to change my opinion of the narrator. At first he sounded like a decent guy, even if his motives weren’t the best. But how he treated the women he dated sounds pretty awful. He says he’s not proud of it now, so maybe something will come later to make me realize he’s grown since then and think better of him. But for now he sounds like a jerk, and really arrogant about how attractive and charming he supposedly was.

This part was a bit repetitive. I already knew the narrator has impure motives and cares about very shallow things. This was just more examples. Like him wanting to commit suicide so people would be sorry for him.

That last section was quite different from all the rest! All book I was kind of wondering why the narrator speaks of himself so disparagingly. Like I thought maybe he would tell the story of how he changed his ways and doesn’t like his old self anymore. But in the end, his conclusion was that he judges himself because in doing so, he actually judges everyone else. But I didn’t see how that is the case? I mean, presumably not everyone behaves like him. Very strange.
