Andre Gide called Dostoyevsky "the greatest of all novelists." Tolstoy stands in the way. Except, it is difficult to compare them. Better, then, to read both.
GO ALONG TO GET ALONG:
There's an old saying, "You have to go along to get along." Reading great literature reminds us that we are not put here to simply get along. We are to be doing more than working out the mechanics of writing a good story. We are, in fact, given this talent to write greatness.
NOURISHMENT FOR THE SOUL:
Great literature reveals the human soul. It reminds us, too, that we are to be doing more with our lives than just getting along. In fact, if we live it right, great literature - the reading of it and the writing of it - can lead us to live great lives. And isn't that what God made us for?
