This is much better written than I expected. For some reason I thought Masterton was a bit of a hack but I’m very impressed with the depth of characters he’s created, not to mention how effective the scare scenes are! Randy is the most likeable character but they all come across as flawed but human rather than good or bad.
I'm happy we at least a decent kill scene at the end of chapter four, because I am so annoyed with everyone. Jack is the worst! He decides to buy this thing on a whim and we make it to page 100 before he even asks himself why the building had been evacuated and unsold since the 20's? He takes Randy to go visit this abandoned building at night? He leaves Randy alone so he can go hook up with Karen? Poor Karen. In the scene where they are back at the hotel room and Jack is asleep and Karen thinks that "she couldn't manage a man with a conscience" ?? This about a man who was dismissive and didn't even bat an eye when she told him a police officer told her she deserved to be physically abused. I think the novel wants us to be on Jack's side, and I'm just not. That being said, I do think the whole people in the walls thing is interesting and I was happy with that gory death at the end of chapter four.
