5 STARS ALL THE WAYI LOVE LOVE LOVED this book! I have read both of the series that came before this one and I was a little worried that it wouldn't hold the same amazing-ness for me that the others did due to it being new characters and new story lines. I was wrong! I almost enjoyed the fact that it was a new fresh start. In fact I think they could have referred to the original Mortal Instruments characters (Jace, Clary, etc.) even less than they did. It is definitely a stand alone series. You don't have to have read The Mortal Instruments to get it, but I definitely recommend reading them just because they are so good. Something I really like about Cassandra Clares books are that her love stories are epic and make you swoon! A lot of love stories I read, especially in this genre, are just bland and predictable. However Clare writes them in a way that you just don't want to put the book down! Something I don't like about most fantasy YA like this is its either corny or the story tries so hard that it doesn't make sense or isn't believable. The shadowhunter world though, is written in such a way that it always feels right. The world feels like it is so well made and constructed that it feels totally viable that this shadow world could exist in the here and now. She never skims over her reasons for doing things within the plot lines and all of the characters are really explained in depth. All questions are always answered, except for the obvious cliff hangers leading into the next book. and Mark's last line of the book... OMG! I CANNOT wait to see what happens next. I only give 5 stars to books I can't put down and this was certainly one of them!
