KillerK8 (k8canapparate) | 5 comments I’m 96 pages in and I don’t love it... still feels v confusing

message 3: by Tainee (new)

Tainee (theveiledreader) (theveiledreader) | 7 comments I'm 132 pages in. While I don't necessarily have strong feelings for it, it's been enjoyable so far. The info dumps, I thought, especially about the characters should have been spreaded out.
The magic system, the author tried to make it as thorough as possible but, I felt like there's something missing. But I guess that when I write up a magic system, consequences are usually bloody if misused. And because this book does not have that, it doesn't seem that appealing to me.
The magic system reminds me so much of Blood Song's magic.
As someone who loves and does world building, especially when it comes to the magic system, this was interesting but it didn't catch my eye.
The plot... Has been rather dull. But it's only picking up, I suppose.

I was having that problem too and had to put it down for a hot minute. The audiobook is...not good, so I think I'm going to have to sit my butt down and physically read it. When I'm done with Priory of the Orange Tree that is, cause I'm almost half way through that.

message 5: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Smith (f00t5_91) I can’t with this book. I’m almost 200 pages in and I don’t like it. It’s too much random info, and some of the characters I feel are completely irrelevant to the story.

My library doesn't have this book and I can't afford to buy new books. I was hoping to listen to the audiobook on scribd. If you don't mind my asking, what's wrong with the audio?

message 7: by Tainee (new)

Tainee (theveiledreader) (theveiledreader) | 7 comments Update: I am 250 pages in and I am getting excited!
This is the first time I actually tried annotating and it helped me a lot in understanding the story, the motives of characters, the magic system, how the order works. I do believe that improvement can be made and that for the book to only pick up after 250 pages is pretty late. But, I found that every info dumped has a reason and that's pretty cool, honestly. Though I can't foreshadow them except a few stuff. But it's definitely getting exciting. Hang tight fellow bookwithfriends!

The female reader doesn't have much emotion and the male reader legitimately sounds like a computer reading a book. I listened to it for an hour and a half and couldn't tell you a thing about what happened.

That sounds terrible. It seems I'll have to find a library that carries the book and give that a try.

KillerK8 (k8canapparate) | 5 comments I will say that I am hereeee for the representation in characters. Big Mood 2k19

message 12: by brett (new)

brett (aelinmanon) i finished the gilded wolves last night and i really enjoyed it but the ending could’ve been better

message 13: by Tonya (new)

Tonya (Rustic Book Reviews) (rusticbookreviews) | 5 comments Wow.. All these comments make me worry about picking up this book. I have heard not so good things about it and I keep hearing the audio book Is not good.

message 14: by Chelsey (new)

Chelsey Mahoney | 1 comments I’m about 100 pages in and so far so good! I’m kind of glad my expectations have been lowered because I haven’t been disappointed yet :P I do find it a tad confusing, but nothing a little brain power can’t sort out. So far anyway!

message 15: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (booksandpsych) | 5 comments I finally bought this today so will he starting it after I finish The Surface Breaks!! So excited to see me reactions through my vlogs when I finish it!! I really hope it helps me get out of my reading slump haha

Nicholas (was Allison) | 5 comments I'm about 37% done with this book so far and I really like it. The magic system is very intriguing and I can see why people compare it to Six of Crows. I have read other books by Chokshi before, and her writing has improved from the previous books I've read by her.

message 17: by KillerK8 (new)

KillerK8 (k8canapparate) | 5 comments I went ahead and DNFed and returned to the library for now. Maybe I’ll try again in the future but I just don’t think it was for me.

message 18: by April (new)

April King | 1 comments I’m having a hard time focusing on this book, especially when I have so many interesting books on my to be read list. This book is just really boring, but I will try to stick with it!

message 19: by Chantelle (new)

Chantelle Devlin (chantelledevlin) | 3 comments I am LOVING this book! I am 167 pages in and tbh I was scared by everyone's DNF'ing and not liking this book. I honestly don't know why, I am in love with this book so far and all the characters! So far my favorite characters are Leila, Severin and Zofia, but they all pretty close. I just cannot put this book down. I'm soo glad i wasn't deterred by all the bad reviews. I haven't found any of it boring yet... I am getting MAJOR Six Of Crow vibes. Severin is Nikolai's twin. <333

message 20: by Joy (new)

Joy (joycerosereads) I’m in agreement with Chantelle. I am just loving this so much.. I, actually glad for all the negative reviews because I went in with really low expectations expecting to hate it and it’s really quite the opposite. I think it’s so wonderful.. it’s going to be a funny and divided live show anyway that’s for sure 😂

message 21: by Katie (new)

Katie Faughnan | 11 comments So I am happy that I went in with low standards because
I ended up loving this book and the characters. I loved the feel and that it took place in Paris.

message 22: by Tib (new)

Tib (tibcanread) | 38 comments I had to put this one down again. Probably not forever, but it's not doing it for me at this point in time and I have so many other books I am wanting to read way more, like April's pick lol. That, and Priory of the Orange Tree has taken over my life and will probably be one of the only books I finish this month because of its heft XD

message 23: by Nicholas (was Allison) (last edited Mar 14, 2019 07:55PM) (new)

Nicholas (was Allison) | 5 comments Some parts I liked about this book and some parts I thought were just okay. My thoughts on a book do tend to change after I've read it, particularly during the first few days after I've read a book they can be quite critical and then I know what my final thoughts are about it.(view spoiler) I read this book in four days because I wanted to see how it would end and whether I would like it or not. I did enjoy the reading experience of it, but it's just not something that I would want to reread, which is why I gave it three stars.

message 24: by Chantelle (new)

Chantelle Devlin (chantelledevlin) | 3 comments Done.. and LOVED it.. so glad this was the pick of the month otherwise I wouldn’t have picked it up due to all the bad reviews. I gave it a 5 out of 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I thought it was a high rating, but I honestly was never bored and I was really invested and loving all the characters. I can’t wait for the sequel 🐺♥️

message 25: by Ruby (new)

Ruby (red-ruby) | 8 comments I'm only 10 chapters into the book and I am having a couple of issues with this book. Besides that I think the book is okay. My problems with the book are not enough for me to DNF it (yet). There is also the fact that my expectations were lowered due to all the negative reviews so that's probably playing into me thinking the book is okay.

~And just to note I do see some SoC similarities

message 26: by Tainee (new)

Tainee (theveiledreader) (theveiledreader) | 7 comments I gave it a 3.75 stars! My full review is up and I can say that I did enjoy it. There were some issues and the pacing was terrible, especially the first 200 pages, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. You can see the effort that was made to create the world.
While I do agree that there are similarities with SOC, I don't see anything wrong with it. It's a heist story after all and there's bound to be similarities.

message 27: by Amanda (last edited Mar 14, 2019 07:09PM) (new)

Amanda | 1 comments I’m 300 pages in and so torn! I am so confused by the magic system and the Order info... it felt like it was the second book in a series that I either forgot or didn’t read the first book to. I also don’t like how they just jump from one event to the next with no explanation of what is happening next. It’s just like oh they are in the library now.
I will say I love the setting. I love the characters, their diversity, and their relationships. I do love what I can understand of the Order and their history and magic. I probably will end up giving this three stars but will continue reading the series. The thought that sticks out strongly to me from my reading journal is this book reminds me of Six of Crows and Dan Brown having a book baby.

message 28: by Joy (new)

Joy (joycerosereads) Just finished and ah just 😍😍😍... I am so sorry to those of you who didn’t enjoy it or are struggling it really seems to be quite polarizing of people who love it and those who hate it. I am so glad I’m one that loved it cause I had such a great time and so much fun reading this. Ugh just so much love 😍😍😍

message 29: by Ruby (new)

Ruby (red-ruby) | 8 comments I just finished the book and overall I thought the book was okay. I gave it a 3⭐ rating. It's definitely not a book I'm going to reread and I'm undecided on whether or not I'm going to continue the series. Despite my issues with the book and it being alright, I do have to say that I enjoyed reading it. My review of the book is on my profile page if you would like to read it.

message 30: by Riley (new)

Riley Clark I just started this book, and in under 30 pages I already think I love it :) Definitely weird how split everybody is with this book, loads of people seem like they can’t get into it, but those who can absolutely love it. Can’t wait for the live show!

message 31: by Mariame (new)

Mariame | 3 comments I have been debating on starting this book because I just read the Six of Crows duology. I loved that duology so much and people are comparing it to the gilded wolves which makes me not want to pick it up. I am in such a bad reading hangover, and idk if this book is gonna help. I don't know what to do!!

message 32: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cindymendoza) I started it yesterday, got 50 pages in and decided to DNF it. I’m confused, bored, and honestly there’s nothing that has made me care to keep going. Really disappointed that this one wasn’t for me 😫 I hope others enjoyed it and will be joining for the live show to see what everyone thought!

message 33: by Lillian (new)

Lillian (swiftiesread) | 2 comments I’m starting today because I desperately need to read this before the liveshow
