The magic system, the author tried to make it as thorough as possible but, I felt like there's something missing. But I guess that when I write up a magic system, consequences are usually bloody if misused. And because this book does not have that, it doesn't seem that appealing to me.
The magic system reminds me so much of Blood Song's magic.
As someone who loves and does world building, especially when it comes to the magic system, this was interesting but it didn't catch my eye.
The plot... Has been rather dull. But it's only picking up, I suppose.

I was having that problem too and had to put it down for a hot minute. The audiobook is...not good, so I think I'm going to have to sit my butt down and physically read it. When I'm done with Priory of the Orange Tree that is, cause I'm almost half way through that.

My library doesn't have this book and I can't afford to buy new books. I was hoping to listen to the audiobook on scribd. If you don't mind my asking, what's wrong with the audio?

This is the first time I actually tried annotating and it helped me a lot in understanding the story, the motives of characters, the magic system, how the order works. I do believe that improvement can be made and that for the book to only pick up after 250 pages is pretty late. But, I found that every info dumped has a reason and that's pretty cool, honestly. Though I can't foreshadow them except a few stuff. But it's definitely getting exciting. Hang tight fellow bookwithfriends!

The female reader doesn't have much emotion and the male reader legitimately sounds like a computer reading a book. I listened to it for an hour and a half and couldn't tell you a thing about what happened.

That sounds terrible. It seems I'll have to find a library that carries the book and give that a try.

I ended up loving this book and the characters. I loved the feel and that it took place in Paris.

~And just to note I do see some SoC similarities

While I do agree that there are similarities with SOC, I don't see anything wrong with it. It's a heist story after all and there's bound to be similarities.

I will say I love the setting. I love the characters, their diversity, and their relationships. I do love what I can understand of the Order and their history and magic. I probably will end up giving this three stars but will continue reading the series. The thought that sticks out strongly to me from my reading journal is this book reminds me of Six of Crows and Dan Brown having a book baby.
