Jaycee Singleton Annie on my mind, written by Nancy Garden, is a wonderful young adults’ novel. This book involves two girls that begin to have feelings for each other when their lives push them together. Coming out and accepting you are gay is a struggling theme throughout this book, as it mirrors todays society today. I have never read a LGBTQ novel, until this one. In fact, I did not know that this was a genre. I found it very interesting, as I do not know much about the LGBTQ community. For young readers, they do not know much either and books like these would really benefit them.
Annie on my mind has so many important themes that are very relevant to today’s world. For instance, the most important theme throughout this book is sexuality. The two main characters, Annie and Liza go through their becoming homosexual and how it affects their relationship. Female sexuality is an awkward subject and puts a restraint on the book itself.
This novel also discusses the theme of love. More importantly, it discusses the theme of lesbian love. This book was very eye opening into the world of homosexual love and the pattern it follows.
Overall, I very much enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it for young readers. Homosexuality has become a very universal topics in our communities and it is important that we expose our young adults to it. This is a great way to start. I am excited to have more fun with reading other LGBTQ genre books.
