I liked this book although it felt a bit rushed at times. I am still not clear why Rian decided to follow the troupe and their quick romance was annoying but, as someone pointed in the other thread, being dropped in the middle of the story of an older woman was refreshing.

Kay, I very much agree. A good read and enjoyed the main character being an older woman (being one myself). I kind of liked that she had an eye for a good looking younger man and wasn't afraid to go for it.

I did think it was a little rushed at times and I found it frustrating that more wasn't made of Maskelle's backstory. For example, the Emperor being her son was revealed in a throw away line and there was limited interaction between the two characters. Maybe a little bit more on the backstory and less description of canals, temples, pavilions, causeways and plazas.
