Lauren (ablondelibrarian) | 8 comments Hi everyone :) I'm just looking for a little bit of advice.

I haven't really read anything from steampunk genre - and to be honest I'm not sure I know what it really means? I hear so many great things about it though...

So could someone be really nice and explain to a steampunk noob exactly what the genre is...and also recommend some books to get me started?

Thanks

Hey Lauren so I got some books for you to start off with:)
So Steampunk is a subcategory of Science Fiction, typically it features steam-powered machinery, and its in a setting inspired by the industrialization of the Western Civilization during the 19th century...did that make sense? basically it is a Sci-Fi esque book that takes place during the Western Civilization and sometimes features Machinery so I got some books for you:)

1.Something Strange and Deadly by Susan Dennard..these books take place in Philadelphia, with a kind of historical setting, and it features romance, adventure and zombies..it is a Fantasy and although it doesn't have machinery it does fall under the category of Steampunk.

2.the Girl in the Steel Corset by Kady Cross..I haven't read this one but it is on my list and the series is called The Steampunk Chronicles:)

hopefully these are enough to get you started and hopefully you like them..also technically The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare are classified as Steamfunk Fantasy!:)

lol before I found out that it was a popular YA subgenre, whenever I thought of Steampunk, I thought of the Steampunk Lolita style of dressing... and for some reason I still get reminded of that... I was too obsessed with learning about Lolita style and pastel goth and stuff like that at some point

I was thinking of reading the first book of the Infernal Devices; I haven't read anything by Clare yet, but if I am reading something, at least it's a shorter series (and I've also heard it's better than TMI I think). And it's also technically Steampunk, so that's two new things in one!
