My name is Anastasia and I have too many favorite female authors, lol. One of my favorites though is Jane Austen. A more modern author I like is Natasha Anders. :)
I am Emily and I love Jane Austen also. I took a course this summer at Cornell University where Janeites spent a week discussing Mansfield Park and Persuasion.
I also like to read mysteries and enjoy classic women mystery writers, like Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers.
I am also reading books written by African women and hope to read Americanah soon.

I'm Lisa and I'm from South Africa. I love reading, seem to read constantly. I think the role of women in literature is pretty awesome. My favorite classics authors include the Bronte sisters and George Elliot; and Jodi Picoult would be my favorite contemporary female author.Always looking to find more though!
Most of my favorite authors are women, starting with Jane Austen, and moving on to Dorothy Sayers, Agatha Christie, Georgette Heyer, L.M. Montgomery (re-reading Anne this summer), Kathleen Thompson Norris (stumbled upon her this summer and wish I could find more), Elizabeth Goudge, Marjorie Allingham... I'm a re-reader and tend to read over and over those books I love.I'm from the U.S., too, rural Idaho, to be exact!
I am Lene. I live in Colorado in the Boulder area. I love all literature, but particularly antiquity and medieval times-- and I know women's writings are rare from those eras, but all the more treasured because of it. I love Elizabeth Goudge's The Dean's Watch. I love children's author's too like Travers' Mary Poppins, and I adore all things "George Eliot'. Basically multiplot novels are my favorite, the more complex the better.
Hi all! I'm Alexa, currently living in North Carolina in the U.S.A. I wouldn't even know where to begin with my favorite authors...Jane Austen of course, but then...Dorothy Dunnett, Dorothy Sayers, Laurie King, Carol Berg, Ursula K. LeGuin, Sherri S. Tepper, Lois McMaster Bujold. I love the idea of attempting to do a chronological and geographical overview of the classics of women's literature.
Im from California. Ive always wanted to read Jane Austen but never really got around to it. I don't read many classics so I hope to work on that list soon. Many have made it on to the TBR list.
My name is Helen, I'm a 40-something Brit who loves has recently got back into reading. I read mainly classics because they are good stories, readily available and usually free on my e-reader.Favourite author would have to be Jane Austen, but I'd love to read more of the Brontes and widen my reading generally :)
Hi,
I'm Christine from the UK and I will read anything from classics to trashy romance, also crime thrillers, fantasy and sci-fi - just about anything really.
In a book reading club at home we recently read all of Elizabeth Gaskell's novels which I enjoyed a lot.

Thanks for the invitation, Lisa. I'm Martha & I live in central Illinois. I love classics. Favorite women authors are Elizabeth Gaskell, Jane Austen and all of the Bronte's. I, also love mysteries and several favorite authors of those are women -- Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, Daphne du Maurier, Nevada Barr, Dana Stabenow, Lisa Gardner. Georgette Heyer is another favorite. I'm now reading my first mystery by her.
Hey, I'm Vassiliki and I'm from Greece. I'm really excited to join this group and find more people interested in classical literature. My favourite female author is Jane Austen and as up to this point I've mostly read the works of male authors, I'm really excited to discover new things through this group.
(please excuse any grammatical/syntactical mistakes I make since I am an English learner and it's not my mother tongue. thanks:) )
Welcome Vassiliki,Your English is good and clear and you have nothing to apologize for. So glad to get different nationalities into this group. (INcidentally my daughter just spent a semester abroad in Athens, and she adores your beautiful friendly country).
I am not a native English speaker either (just for the record), I was born and raised in Denmark.
Hi, everyone! I'm Sarah from rural Ohio, and I am a book lover; there are always stacks of books around my house waiting to be read, and I never go anywhere without a book. The classics have a special place in my heart. One of my favorites is Jane Eyre. :-)
Several of you have mentioned Elizabeth Goudge. My mother had most of Goudge's books scattered around the house when I was growing up in the 60's. I might have read one. I didn't know anyone read her books anymore. Perhaps we can consider reading some forgotten authors, like Elizabeth Goudge, some month.

Her most famous book was probably Green Dolphin Street, which was made into a movie, too, decades ago, although I've never seen it. Strangely enough, it's not one of my favorites!
Yes. I hear you. I moved from a 12 room house with over 2,000 sq ft to one half that size. We are over run with books. A nice problem to have. :-)
Hi, I'm Debbie, I live in Epping, UK. Always been in love with the classics. My favourites are Elizabeth Gaskell, Bronte sisters, Jane Austen, George Eliot, and many more.Favourite contemporary female authors include Sarah Waters, Audrey Niffenegger, Donna Tartt, Margaret Atwood, Zadie Smith and A. M. Homes. Look forward to joining the group (thanks for the invite Lisa x).

Greetings All!My reading habits/preferences swing from one extreme end of the spectrum to the other. I enjoy classic lit (I'm in 3 classics GR groups), then I like really trashy stuff at the opposite end of the spectrum with a few mysteries in between.
With regard to the question of who my fave woman author is, I can't say. I don't think that I have read enough titles.

We moved into my in-laws' house. I retired just over a year ago. Absolutely love the extra reading time ... well, extra time for everything. :-)
I came out of "early retirement" to watch three of my grandkidlets full-time. It's been a lot of fun, and I sleep well, and, yes, I'm looking forward to retiring again!
I guess I'm semi-retired. I serve as a personal service worker for our adult handi-capable son and was watching grandkids after school. Haven't had to yet this year. I miss them, but enjoy my free afternoons. :-)

Should be interesting and probably a bit painful...
The lazy me is loving my free afternoons, but the grandma me is really missing those kids every day. And we were doing regular family dinners here. Miss all of that and hope we can get back to it. I am doing some extra cleaning and purging though. Making room for all the books. LOL

If we've hijacked this thread, I apologise for Martha and myself! (but it's so nice to get to know people!)
Welcome everybody! It's great to see you all. I'm excited to see that our tastes all vary and that each member brings new and exciting thoughts to the group. To our 'thread-hijackers', is there ever such a thing as enough bookshelves?
No ... Never!! I could turn my entire home into a library and be so happy. My hubby and son might not be so happy! LOL
My husband thinks it's odd to read so much, but I think he's vaguely sort of proud of it. As long as I don't make him move boxes of books, that is!
My house was being remodeled a few years ago and i was talking to one of my friends about adding bookshelves in my room. She said i should buy book shelves i should just use the walls and not worry about drywall. At the rate im going with 3 full bookshelves that might have been a good idea lol, just build them in. No need to paint walls.
My dream is the library from Disney's "Beauty and the Beast." I already have enough books to fill it! They're currently in all my drawers (no clothes, just books!) and in storage containers in my room and throughout the house. There is no such thing as too many books, just too little space!
I was a member of the Villette grp read. I supposed all of the discussion is lost as well? This was our last week to discuss for those readers who were sticking to the schedule. I was reading on the schedule.
Martha wrote: "No ... Never!! I could turn my entire home into a library and be so happy."We've practically done that (as you can see from the photos on my page).
Found it! Love the library look, and, by the way, I was born in Mt. Vernon and have fond memories of island hopping!
