3 burglars who robbed a famous retired author and one of the robbers was a crazed fan of a series by the author. The last addition was not published, the fan was mad about it so he killed the old man and stole his manuscript and money. Knowing he was going to prison, He hid them in a chest near a tree by a pond, that was found by a boy who later he would hunt down.

This is definitely Finders Keepers by Stephen King.
