Seems really creepy waking up and everyone is blind though, I recon its right in saying all the blind people would get desperate to get hold of someone that can see to help them find food. I can also understand that the main character doesn't try to help, there is no way you could help them all, and only so long you could help them at all. Would be really hard not to help them though when you see them starving on the streets... (hide spoiler)]

Also, want to tell yall that my sister is blind. I grew up around blind people and just as an FYI...99.999999% of blind stories get blind people a billion percent wrong.

I also notice all of these stories pretend that there were no blind people previously. What would happen if the world went blind tomorrow? Currently blind people would run this place. ;-) (hide spoiler)]

It's a mystery! I guess they all became sighted and then went blind again but lost their ability to completely get around with mostly no problems.

*cough* well... I did make it a little ways in, but then I had a nice long drive during which I needed an audiobook... and then I got hooked on it and neglected to read anymore Triffids.

I am the WORST! BUT... I am going to dedicate my reading time to Triffids going forward... as soon as I catch up on all of my review writing. LOL

Doodle, are you a fan of The Walking Dead? Either the show or the original GN?

Haven't tried the GN. Watched the first couple of seasons i think when it first came out and i liked it but never got around to watching the rest.

Just curious, because of the similarities between how they start, with both of the main characters missing the 'main event' of the apocalypse or whatever this turns out to be because they were in the hospital. I don't know of (or can't think of) any others.

I'm around 13% now and reading the qualities and features of the Triffids, and I am quite confused. Where did they come from? Is that explained? Also how is this relevant to the green shooting stars?

Yea I have no idea what its got to do with the shooting stars, I'm hoping it will explain that later...
The origin of them are somewhat explained later on though :)

Nah, not stressing really, just realizing how bad a buddy I've been for this read compared to my very recent last one! LOL

Anyway, I'm getting back into it now, and should make some progress!

16%: (view spoiler)[So it seems that Walter was right about the sight weakness, and how the Triffids might exploit that. If not for the accident with his sight, where he was ALMOST blinded, the main character would definitely have been blinded from the meteors or whatever. (hide spoiler)]

20%: (view spoiler)[The gang of men who march into Piccadilly Circus, and take women. Not surprising. The MC saying that he shouldn't have tried to intervene because she'd have a better chance of survival for being "adopted by this gang" bothers me though.

It's like he's saying that she should be grateful for her kidnap and forced sexual slavery because they'll feed her. You know, food in exchange for being gang raped is totally a fair trade!

And yea the plants only weakness against humans is that we can see them coming, so def looks like Walter was right. Still not sure how the plants and the meteors are connected though! I feel its unlikely that the blinding meteors are completely unrelated to the plants, but I don't see how the plants could arrange a meteorshower either xD (hide spoiler)]

I'm getting quite annoyed with this book, specifically the main character's casual misogyny. He has more acute concern for the abusers in a situation than the women he's supposedly helping.

I'm gonna give this a bit more, but if it doesn't move on or get really interesting, I'm calling it. I'm not having a good run of 50's literature right now. I'm reading two, and both feel extremely dated and.... Not great.

Yea it does feel dated, and from a time when there were different standards when it comes to gender roles in literature...

The more i buddy read the more I realize that I don't reflect over what i read as much as other people. Though I understand what you're saying and agree with it, it's not something I was thinking of while reading. Kinda interesting to me, and I'm going to try to reflect more as I keep reading the book. If you want to DNF that is ok btw :D I might try to read more to see how I get along with it.

Uggghhh and now the VICTIM is defending the guy.

Okie doke, I'm sorry but I think I'm going to officially DNF this one. I just can't with this main character and his attitude toward women. It's probably appropriate to the time, but god am I not in the mood for it.

It is just so condescending. Her entire household has just been killed, she's in a postapocalyptic situation with a stranger, and he obligingly condescends to let her grieve in his vicinity while he has a cigarette. How nice of him.

Yeah... and considering that it's like the 4th book in a row (if we count the one I'm reading simultaneously) with misogynist attitudes, I'm just... noping out. I could potentially overlook it, but within just a few pages there was ALL of the things I mentioned in this book, so it seems to be getting worse, not better.

Gonna switch gears COMPLETELY for my next book, I think. LOL

THis book sounds terrible.

It was going OK... if a little slow, until the blindness apocalypse happened, and then all of a sudden, the M/C just turned into the hugest douche.

Granted, he could have been the whole time, but we didn't really get to see him interact with anyone (aside from one nurse, and he wasn't in the best headspace for that as he thought he could have been blinded, and she kept raving on about how beautiful the meteor shower that he was missing was - such a shame - so, I'll give him a pass)...

And then when it did, it's just kind of a "women need a man to take care of them, and if they have to 'lie back and think of England' to earn their keep, then what do they REALLY have to complain about? and I'm sure they'll all agree with me on that once I explain the harsh realities to them, as I am a Man, and they are... whatever weak little vagina-holders are called. "

This coming from the guy who won't break a window to steal food... just.. No. Nope. GTFOH.

This group that they joined had filled a truck with women from an institution (they had been blind before the event). Because blind women can have seeing babies...

What triggered me more was that the female character (i cant even remember her name? J-something) was completely fine with this. She even tells the guy that its likely that each man will be paired with one 'seeing' woman and 2 blind women. To make the babies of course. The guy actually reacts to this saying it is unnatural or whatever. The woman responds with : not to worry, she will pick a couple of nice, sensible ones.

Wow. What the hell. it's interesting to me that in most post-apocalyptic type books the general theme is trying to survive with no real hope of normality ever returning but with this book it really seems like in a single generation normality could be right back where it was and this was just a temporary blip and people are taking full advantage of it to just be the worst kind of sexist misogynistic douchebags!
