I don't think we can, a century plus later, can imagine Joanna having many choices. I expect this was the lesser evil in her mind. She certainly would not have been accepted at home. Shows how ingrained blaming the female victim mentality was in that culture.
I don’t think she had any other alternative other than going to the mission house. Going back to that family was definitely not an option. Ugh.
It was heartbreaking to realize such depravity could be done to women and the men able to get away with it.
