Trelawn Just started today, only about 15 pages in.

Trelawn I picked a copy with the tinchiest writing, I'll be squinting by the time i'm done :-)

Trelawn I'm almost 40 pages in and so far it's not grabbing me. It's like a poor version of North and South. I'll keep going for a bit and see if it picks up.

Trelawn I remember you saying that Emma, I'm also allowing for the fact that this was her first novel. I'll stick with it for now.

Diane I hope you aren"t all finished by the time I get the book. Library didn't have a copy and Guggisberg's is too tiny to read. I had to buy a copy but it won't get here for a week.

Trelawn Well I'm still only 70ish pages in and Emma isn't starting till the weekend so you'll be ok Diane.

Trelawn Sorry but I'm giving up on this one. I made it almost to the 100 page mark but just didn't take to it. The characters didn't grow on me and the style is just to overblown. Even taking into account that this is her first novel I don't think I can stick with it.

Diane Bummer. And to think I bought it.

Trelawn Sorry Diane but I don't think it's a bad book but having read her later works first, it just wasn't doing it for me.

Trelawn I am disappointed because I really enjoyed the other two books I read but I just couldn't take to it sadly.

Diane Well, when the Mary Barton arrives I'll still read it. I liked her other books. This was her test drive book I guess.

Trelawn I'll be interested to see how you get on with it Emma

Marcia | 437 comments I've just finished North and South and loved it. I thought the plot was similar to Pride and Prejudice.

I really enjoyed this book. I might look at this one later.

Trelawn North and South is an incredible story and so well told. I will have to read more of Gaskell as I also enjoyed Cranford. She was an exceptional social commentator. And some of her imagery is just startling. When Margaret goes to the factory and says "I have seen Hell, and it is white".

Trelawn You've surpassed me on the Gaskell front, I'll have to keep an eye out for copies over christmas.

Trelawn Will do. haven't seen it myself and normally Chapters would be your best bet for that sort of book. once the book buying embargo is lifted i will be keeping an eye out for a few things.
