Allison For English, I have to read 20 books by the end of the year, and they all have to be over 100 pages. I only read clean books (nothing that would be rated PG-13 or R if it was a TV show or movie). And to add on to that, I will take a quote out of the paper.

"Read 20 books during the year including at least one novel from each of these genres:
-Fantasy
-Science Fiction
-Historical Fiction
-Mystery/Horror/Thriller
-Realistic Fiction
-Informational
-Biography/Memoir/Autobiography."

((I hate hate HATE numbers 3, 6, and 7!))

Since I read 90+ books last school year, I wanted to push myself a little farther this year. Maybe to 100 or 150 books? But I can't find anything good to read!

Any suggestions?

Ok, I'll try my best. :) I'll try to keep my recommendations clean - I don't read R-rated books but I'm not sure what counts as PG-13.
In fantasy, one of my favorite authors is Robin McKinley; most of her books are clean and I'd especially recommend The Hero and the Crown, that's a really great book! Honestly, there are so many good fantasy books out there - if you haven't read Harry Potter, Narnia, or Lord of the Rings then definitely check them out. But you may not know Madeleine L'Engle - try The Time Quartet Box Set, a truly excellent series, but if I were you I'd just do a general search on her, she's written some truly beautiful books in both fantasy and fiction! Oh, and maybe check out books by Shannon Hale, like Princess Academy and The Goose Girl - I'd definitely count them as clean and they're very imaginative. :)
It's hard to find clean sci-fi books because a lot of the material is mature, but try Fahrenheit 451. I mostly read short stories in this genre so if you're limited to novels I can't suggest much, sorry. :(
Robin Mckinley also wrote a really good Robin Hood story called The Outlaws of Sherwood, does that count as historical fiction? If not, just go for the classics! Some of my favorites are The Secret Garden, Little Women, and Anne of Green Gables. And of course there's always Dickens, Hemingway, Bronte, etc, they're all really good. :)
I don't like mysteries much so I don't have many suggestions, but I did enjoy The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie.
Unfortunately, I also don't read much fiction. I suppose you could try Holes and Life of Pi, they're cute, funny and interesting. :) As well, those classics would also count as realistic fiction - it doesn't have to be contemporary, does it?
For those last two, I can't recommend any titles, but just look for whatever interests you. Is there a certain historical figure that you've always been curious about? Look for a biography of them. Do you have a favorite hobby? Look for an informational book about it. I'd check out Art and Music myself, since those subjects have lots of cool stories and history. Go click on Goodreads's 'shelves' page and search. :D
Good luck and hope this helped!

Allison Oh, thank you so much! I'll try to get my hands on some of those.

No problem. :D

Reann Mind if I make some suggestion? I'm not exactly sure if they're PG or R rated some of them but they aren't bad. And I don't know how many of these you've read but these are some of my favourite books so...
Okay there's The Host by Stepenie Meyer
The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer series but Michelle Hopkins
The Harry Potter series by J.K Rowling
Legend by Marie Lu
and this one I read a really long time ago but I still remember it. I think, if I remember correctly, its an under PG-13 rated book. Its called The Other Side of The Island by Allegra Goodman.

Allison Oh, thank you.

What I mean by "PG-13" is no sex scenes (and preferably no implied ones), no makeout scenes, no major swears like the F-bomb, or B word or S word or N word. I'm okay with violence, as long as it's not super graphic. Sorry if I confused you guys.

Ok, that's pretty close to what I assumed...you shouldn't have a problem with my recommendations, I hope. :)

message 8: by Reann (new)

Reann Okay well none of those have any major...any of those scenes except maybe the first two. They aren't that bad tho.

Allison That's okay. If it gets too bad for me I just put the book down and don't read the rest.
