This book is part of a series titled “women are some kind of magic”. I learned a lot from this book as I will now share. Ms. Lovelace doesn’t use much punctuation in her books, so the first thing I really learned was the use/lack of punctuation can really make or break a poem, and even a book. I’ve written some poetry with such an excessive amount of punctuation you get completely lost reading it. I’ve also written poetry with zero punctuation and once again, gotten completely lost because there are no guidelines as to how to read the poem. Next, I got a better sense of the use of “raw” work. I’ve always thought of raw to be a good word to describe unedited work, but hers is different. Obviously her work is well edited as it was published and she’s a successful writer. Her “rawness” is in the meaning of what she’s saying. It’s the emotion that you feel and the words she uses that gives the raw and bare feelig of being totally genuine about the truths of life and that’s something I absolutely love but I’m pretty bad at. Finally, I learned some new structure things that I want to try in my own work.
