Is anyone else thinking that the lady dressed in black and the two lovers are symbolic? They're just always popping up in the story thus far, it makes me wonder.

The two lovers must have some meaning. I was surprised to see them turn up againhIi

Carolien (carolien_s) | 177 comments I have been reading some of the short stories that form part of the copy that I have and there are some beautiful stories. I especially liked one called Desiree.

I did a google, haha, and found that the lovers are supposed to represent Robert and Edna if they'd met earlier in life (before her marriage) and the women in black is supposed to represent what would be expected of Edna if her husband died.

Carolien (carolien_s) | 177 comments That's so interesting. Thanks for telling us.

Thanks for sharing that with us!

No problem, ladies. It certainly fleshes the story out when you factor that in.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 315 comments I felt that Robert left the island to go to Mexico because of His feelings for Edna--to remove himself from temptation.

At this point, I'm not certain if Robert loves Edna or if he feels that he was perilously close taking his flirtation too far and creating a messy scandal.

That is so interesting, never would have figured that out by myself I think.

I also think he left because of his feelings for Edna and I think he has genuine feelings for her since he seems to ignore other women pretty quickly when Edna is around and is giving all his attention to her. I also think that she has strong feelings for him that become more obvious to her after he leaves.
