What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I read a book sometime between 1989 and 1992. I think it was a fantasy thriller. I remember one person arrived in a town that was hidden away and kind of forgotten. This person met the locals and noticed the women were in control and controlled their husbands (one husband was in a wheelchair because his wife cut his legs off I think) the wives would go off in the woods during the night to have secret rituals. I seem to remember they would ride big horses and one was black and the eyes of the horses or wives glowed red. I think the men were all maimed somehow and some husbands I think were killed by these wives if they didn’t obey.

It's not quite the same (I don't remember any horses or glowing red), but Thomas Tryon's Harvest Home has a village where women control and maim men (although now I think about it, that may be blinding them). So probably not your book, but worth a try!
