The Luminous Dead? I don't know if I'd consider it a real monster story but there is one and they are pretty scared of it.

I'm going to be stalking this thread for recommendation too. Because I'd love more monster horrors...

Hmm, do you mind YA? Cuckoo Song scared me (to be fair, I'm an easy scare) and was beautifully written.

No romance in that one that I can recall!
