Mine was this little classic tale of creeping dread. It hits me with chills right down to my bones every time I read it.

When I was narrating the story there is a bit in part 1 that had me in near tears. But to know that this was a real cure that was prescribed to women scares the hell outta me.

Yeah, that's what makes it so chilling and horrifying.

Scariest? That's a tough one... The scariest thing for me would be the loss of a child, and I've read a few books that involved that.... "Personal" scary, I'd have to say THE YELLOW WALLPAPER definitely is high up there.

Yeah, the thought of being locked away, having no support system and slowly losing your sanity because of it - that chills me to the bone.

I'm relatively new to the horror genre in general, which is kind of cool because I'm a super easy scare so I don't have a lot of those jaded "eh, it wasn't so scary" reactions many readers have. But I also haven't read much yet so make of that what you will.

But I was chugging along And Her Smile Will Untether the Universe for the first few stories, thinking, oh, this is well-written but not really scary. Then I read the one with Audrey and was completely terrified of going to sleep that night... and the next... Okay, so it's been a few days and I haven't mustered the courage to pick the collection back up yet.

(It is a very good book.)

You all talking about The Yellow Wallpaper in this thread made me finally read it this morning, and WOW. That... *shudder* No wonder it's so widely beloved!

Yep!! Love it so much!! I narrated it for the podcast this month. The story always makes me shudder.

That is one of my fav collections. Gwendolyn is so talented. It think that is a great collection to start with. I would suggest some Angela Carter next.

I read a couple years ago and it still gives me creepies just thinking about it.

The first time I read it was my writing 101 class. I loved it.

This book gave me nightmares, but I still loved the book as I put it on my favorites shelf! lol

Among the scariest I've read would be Slights - by Kaaron Warren gives you chills. For more extreme tastes, I'd suggest Mr. Suicide by Nicole Cushing.
