I want to know more about Ellen too! She’s definitely an interesting character. We’ve gotta see more from her. She’s definitely not gone for good (I hope).
I’m surprised more people weren’t suspicious of Tom starting the fire. It seems awfully convenient that he shows up looking for work the day before the church catches fire. And also, Jack would’ve reeked of smoke right? Anyway, I guess they were too busy saying it was the devil lol.

"Piss on that!" Ellen shouted.
I love Ellen.
Yes! Ellen’s reaction to being called a “fornicator” was great! It is kind of BS that Tom gets to just go on being Tom and doing his masonry but she has to “confess” and leave! WTH? Like she said, it takes two to fornicate!

Are there any likable characters outside of Ellen and Jack at this point?

That being said... the fire happened and WOW I AM HOOKED. Took a bit but this book took off.

Finally some one else who did not like it
I dnf'ed it twice, then listened it on audible
I struggled to get through it but I did finish it. It was not my cup of tea, too barbaric and found many parts boring.

I absolutely hated the unfairness with Ellen. I was cheering her on with how she reacted. I wonder if in that time a woman would have been brave enough to do that though? I’m not sure. Maybe though.
Tom is a character that I should dislike because of some of his actions. But I think that he’s good deep down.
