Let's talk about Chapters 3-4 here! How is the read going for you?

Lacey I really want to know the story about Ellen!

I want to know more about Ellen too! She’s definitely an interesting character. We’ve gotta see more from her. She’s definitely not gone for good (I hope).

I’m surprised more people weren’t suspicious of Tom starting the fire. It seems awfully convenient that he shows up looking for work the day before the church catches fire. And also, Jack would’ve reeked of smoke right? Anyway, I guess they were too busy saying it was the devil lol.

Mike | 12 comments "Hypocritical perverts," she said disgustedly. "They spend all night up one another's arseholes and then they have the nerve to call what we're doing a sin."

"Piss on that!" Ellen shouted.

I love Ellen.

Yes! Ellen’s reaction to being called a “fornicator” was great! It is kind of BS that Tom gets to just go on being Tom and doing his masonry but she has to “confess” and leave! WTH? Like she said, it takes two to fornicate!

Mike | 12 comments Ha ha! Tom's reaction to the whole thing was typical Tom. Ugh...I'm starting to really dislike that guy...and when did his son become such an asshole? Take one roll, Alfred! Just one!

Are there any likable characters outside of Ellen and Jack at this point?

Lacey So far I like Phillip. You can tell he just wants to be a good monk and make everything run smoothly and quietly.

Chad | 13 comments So the whole fire... and how Phillip did not react to the fact that the night that it happened they just happened to be there. They took this as Gods will but wow if I were Phillip I would have some red flags going off. Even if Tom was completely innocent to this... that is a very crazy thing to happen when it did.

That being said... the fire happened and WOW I AM HOOKED. Took a bit but this book took off.

Finally some one else who did not like it
I dnf'ed it twice, then listened it on audible
I struggled to get through it but I did finish it. It was not my cup of tea, too barbaric and found many parts boring.

Jennifer (bimpers) | 6 comments I was very surprised at the lack of suspicion that Tom might have set the fire as well but I guess in the 1100’s it would have been different than now due to religious beliefs being more the driving force? (I’m not sure what word or phrase I’m looking for).
I absolutely hated the unfairness with Ellen. I was cheering her on with how she reacted. I wonder if in that time a woman would have been brave enough to do that though? I’m not sure. Maybe though.
Tom is a character that I should dislike because of some of his actions. But I think that he’s good deep down.
