Leonard Gaya (leonard_gaya) "Nietzsche et le psychisme ascensionnel" is probably the centrepiece (and the most inspiring section) of this book. Bachelard, forgoing a philosophical analysis of Nietzsche, endeavours to consider his writings as those of a poet: his moral philosophy is thus viewed as a derivative of his imagination.

Bachelard focuses mostly on Zarathustra and first shows how Air -- more than Earth, Water and Fire -- is Nietzsche's favourite element. Not only that but the cold, sharp, silent and deserted air of the mountains and glaciers. From high up, Zarathustra can then observe and assess the ways of men. Bachelard goes on to study a few of the typical Nietzschean images: the rock in the blue sky, the pine tree hanging above the gorge, the lightning bolt, the boat floating in the air, the eagle soaring above the peaks, the rising sun.

A beautiful text, indeed. Some side notes on comparing Nietzsche and Shelley are impressive as well.
