The Color Brown: Brown Bear!

The brown bear is found in America, Canada, and Russia. It is also the national animal of Finland. It is officially listed as a “least concern” species, with a total worldwide population of about 200,000. Females do not become sexually mature until the age of five, and will produce litters of one to four cubs. Given their size, it’s amazing that baby cubs weight less than one pound at birth, and are born with hair or teeth.

Brown bears will venture into cities and towns in search of food. While rare, there is an average of two fatal brown bear attacks against humans in North American each year.

Robin | 361 comments Texas Fact from the History Channel Website "On January 10, 1901, an enormous geyser of oil exploded from a drilling site at Spindletop Hill, a mound created by an underground salt deposit located near Beaumont in Jefferson County, southeastern Texas. Reaching a height of more than 150 feet and producing close to 100,000 barrels a day, the “gusher” was more powerful than any previously seen in the world. A booming oil industry soon grew up around the oil field at Spindletop, and many of the major oil companies in America, including Gulf Oil, Texaco and Exxon, can trace their origins there." (Beaumont is where I grew up.)

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) Brown eyes appear brown due to the presence of a pigment known as melanin, the same pigment that causes skin to tan. Dark brown eyes have more melanin and lighter brown eyes have less. This pigment can protect the body from some types of cancers; research suggests that those with brown eyes are less likely to have melanoma cancer. Without melanin eye color would appear blue.

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) The city of Houston was founded in August of 1836 by brothers Augustus and John Allen. The city is named after General Sam Houston, who led the Texas Army to its victory over General Santa Anna's Mexican forces at the 1836 Battle of San Jacinto. In 1837, the city of Houston was incorporated into the Republic of Texas and served as its capital from 1837 to 1840.

Today the city of Houston has a population of over 4.3 million inside it's city and Harris county metropolitan borders. Houston is one the few cities with permanent ballet, opera, symphony and theater companies. There are more than 30 museums, 500 parks, 100+ golf courses, 60 movie theaters and over 8,000 restaurants.

Houston is located in the Central Time Zone and has a mild year-round climate.
