Point System

         Book Points
     ◈ Books between 160 and 200 pages = 5 points
     ◈ Books between 201 and 300 pages = 10 points
     ◈ Books between 301 and 400 pages = 20 points
     ◈ Books between 401 and 500 pages = 40 points
     ◈ Books between 501 and 650 pages = 60 points
     ◈ Books between 651 and 800 pages = 80 points
     ◈ Books over 801 pages = 100 points

         Aditional Points
     ◈ BOM DQs = 40 points
     ◈ BOM participation = 20 points
     ◈ First word completed = 15 points
◈ Genre Book = 5 points per book for a maximum of 50 points (10 books)

         Pages-Per-Point Guide
Bethany wrote: "
The lower the number of pages per point, the faster you can theoretically accumulate points. This will help you get an idea of the points per page for each tier of pages.

The Advantage of Books at the Bottom of Tiers
The closer a page count is to the bottom of a tier, the fewer pages to read in order to get one point. This difference is more pronounced in the lower tiers. In general, lower end of the tier is better.

The Advantage of Short Books
Short books are psychologically easier to get through. Even if you don't like it, a short book can be easier to push through and finish. If you decide not to finish a short book, it is overall a lower potential loss of reading time and points. I might finish five 100 page books more quickly than one 500 page book, simply because each book is less daunting and the sense of progress is less ponderous.

The Advantage of Long Books
Long books tend to have a lower number of pages required to earn a point. In higher page number books, books at the top of that page tier aren't as drastically different from the lower part of the range in their pages-per-point ratio than lower tiers. Finishing a long book gives us a lot of points, and can be really satisfying.

The Advantage of Totally Ignoring Page Numbers
If you don't go for books based on what you enjoy or what you feel like reading, you'll probably read slower. So read books that YOU are really excited about, and maybe let the considerations of page number influence you if you can't decide."

Hello fellow When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbitians!

This section is going to have useful information regarding the challenge we are about to endure. If you have played Wheel-a-thon before, you can probably skip ahead. If you haven't played before please read on :)

WaT is a team challenge where every week the mods spin a wheel and assign a word to each team. Then, for that week, you need to read as much as you can and spell-it-out the word you were given. We can spell as many words as we want.
It will start on the 14th of June so

**NO books may be STARTED for WaT until June 14th**

Captain/Co-Captain's Availability:
Captain - Eni Timezone GMT+1 (same as London, UK). Available everyday after 10pm.
      Co-captain - Lexi Timezone GMT+5:30 (IST or EST-9:30).

We are also always available through pm, so feel free to message us with any concerns/doubts/requests you have.

**Before posting any questions, please read the RULES**

If after reading the rules you still have questions, please follow the communication chain:

**Member --> Team Captain/Co-captains --> Mods**

This means that you can´t go over the captains/co-captains directly to the mods. The mods will be busy running and organizing the game and they can't answer every participating member's question.

If your profile is set to private, make sure you are friends with Moderators of NBRC and your captain/co-captains so that your books can be properly tracked on the spreadsheet.

Reporting Books Read
When posting a complete book, please let us know the following:
     Book Title
     Date read
     Number of pages
if it is a BOM, did you write questions or just participated, and link to comment
     Character Names

Last recomendation - HAVE FUN :)

Helpful Hints:

      ⚑For Word Count
160 pages or 40,000 words or 4 hours (as verified by Audible or Overdrive) is the minimum
You can check word count on Arbook find or Reading Length

     ⚑ Posting a link
Option 1 - type < a href="insert link here"> my link text< /a> without the space before the first a, without the space before "my" and without the space before /a
Option 2 - when you are writing a post, there's a small button over your comment box that says (some html is ok). Click there, select and copy the option that says link, paste it on your comment box and alter it.

⚑ Posting a picture on GR
First you will need an image uploader. There are tons of them online. At this moment i use imgur. You register for an account and then find the button that says images or add images and start adding stuff :)
After having the image uploader set up and an image uploaded you will have a screen similar to this:
(view spoiler)
copy the direct link and paste it in your comments with the code
          < img src="insert link here" width="40" height="100" alt="description"/>
without the space before the first i. The width and height, you can use it and tweak with the pic's size or you can just remove it all together. Same for the description. So a simpler version would look like:
          < img src="insert link here"/>
without the space before the first i.

     ⚑ Finding a Book Genre
Go to http://www.goodreads.com/genres/GENRE (GENRE should be the desired genre you are looking for: classics, horror, fantasy, etc) and then choose more popular GENRE books.
After selecting a book, just make sure that your desired genre is on the first page of genres

Lexi | 4341 comments Hi all, please post and check-in.

For anyone interested in writing BOM questions, the sign up for June YA closes on June 13th (here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...). We also get points in you participate in the BOM for YA June, either in July, and Adult in August.

Our first word is CHOCOLATE, and we need 10 books that are first page genre (FPG) classics. Remember that books must be STARTED on or after June 14th to count. Also, for anyone having done other challenges, minimum page count is 160 pages and word count for genres that you need to check is 40,000. Also, if people like to plan books, points by page count are for the edition you are reading.

Otherwise, what genres are you most hoping we get or hoping we do not get? I personally do not like most MPG New Adult but am hoping for more variety in FPG.

Elen | 1301 comments Hey! I'm checking in!! 😄😄

My shelf

I will definitely participate in all BOM's, but not in DQ's. 🤣

I already have couple classics in hand and will be reading them as the countdown for start hits 0. At the beginning of the year, I asked my mum to recommend her favourite Russian classics for me to read them, so I can tackle that challenge down in our first week. Also, my first week free from exams. Yey for me :))

I don't mind any of the genres as it's a challenge. But FPG New adult and Memoir are something I don't read at all, but I will if we will need them :D

Are we going to use tracking SS and will we post completion post right here, right? :))

message 22: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments Hi all,
I will post my shelf when I get on my computer next. I find links annoying in the app. I participated in Wheel last year.
I will look for a few classic books. Coming from uno I’m going to need to keep reminding myself of the 160 page minimum. I mostly listen to classics so I have to see if I can find any that are not too long.
I’m mostly alright with the listed genres. However, I do not read horror. I don’t like being scared.
I will have to see about the BOM. I will try and at least participate in daily questions. It will depend a little on getting the books from the library.
I have not read the book that is our team name.

Eni | 2349 comments Annalisa wrote: "So I can find that random book that has a FPG tag of horror but is actually not horror?"

yes! As long as it's tagged on the first page as horror it's all good =)

Also i've updated post 5 with the most popular books from each genre we will need :)

Rebecca (radf) | 1154 comments Hello everyone! I’m excited to meet some new people. Lexi and I have played on teams before and I’m happy to be teamed up with her again. She’s an A-MAZING teammate and captain.
I have all three BOMs lined up which I’ll also answer the DQ’s on. I also just downloaded When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit since it’s a classic it should come in handy plus I’m just curious about it. The summary looks good so why not give it a try.
Happy reading!

message 27: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 1149 comments Hello everyone! I'm excited for a wheel challenge! For the genres on the wheel, the ones I read the most are classics, memoirs, and space opera. My least favorite genre is new adult.

message 28: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments I could potentially read Colleen Hoover if we get new adult. I don’t mind her books and it seems like most of them are tagged new adult.

message 29: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments I’m curious about the difficult letters. It lists I Q O U X Y Z but the words on the wheel do not have Q X Y Z so those are impossible letters unless there is something I’m missing.

Hello everyone!! I'm Wren and I'm pretty new to this group and its challenges but I'm excited to try this one out! My timezone is GMT-10 which is probably different from everyone else but I try to be online a lot.

Here's a link to my shelf. I have a few classics lined up for the first week. I don't plan on reading horror or memoirs since they're genres I don't enjoy.

Nice to meet everyone!

message 31: by Annalisa (last edited Jun 11, 2019 06:12PM) (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments Here is the link to my shelf.

I also have a few classics I can listen to starting on Friday. I'm going to start with Kim by Rudyard Kipling. Then I'll pick from Faro's Daughter by Georgette Heyer, The Scarlet Pimpernel by Emmuska Orczy, Black Beauty by Anna Sewell, and The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane.

Update: I have a hold on The Upside of Unrequited but I am 7th in line for 3 copies so there is a pretty good chance I won't get it in time.

message 32: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4341 comments Welcome all,
The classics I am looking at possibly reading are Dune, De Profundis (50,000 words-I checked), The Sea-Hawk, or The Sound and the Fury.

I am trying to not read books under 300 pages since the point values are so different unless I need them for another challenge.

Lexi | 4341 comments Annalisa wrote: "I’m curious about the difficult letters. It lists I Q O U X Y Z but the words on the wheel do not have Q X Y Z so those are impossible letters unless there is something I’m missing."

Those are the standard hard letters for NBRC so they do not change. This time seems to only be O and U, so we are doing well to have Os in our first words on this front.

Elen | 1301 comments As I am going to read classics in the Cyrillic alphabet.
I think I know the answer but want to make sure it's correct...

Can or can't I use the title? Example Отцы и дети
I mean in this case the letter is obvious, but for some titles not so much

Btw, names are going to be in English

On previous challenges we were allowed to read books in different languages, because what counts is the version we read. Let me check with the mods and get back to you on that though.

Elen | 1301 comments Eni wrote: "On previous challenges we were allowed to read books in different languages, because what counts is the version we read. Let me check with the mods and get back to you on that though."

I have read previously in Estonian, which alphabet is similar to English.
But this time I'm going to try to read in Russian. Haven't read in Russian since I was a kid. But Russian and Englis alphabet are very different.

Example: English - P
Russian - П

I think we can't, cuz only I can say what letter is what and for Mods to search the letter to the letter would be a pain in the a** :PP

Eni | 2349 comments I updated post 8 with June's Back Room BOM. It's an erotica book, which is why it's in the back room group, however it still counts for BOM points for this challenge. If you are over 18 and have an interest in joining the discussion, let us know and we will send you an invite for the group =)

message 38: by Eni (new)

Eni | 2349 comments Also welcome everyone!

I haven't asked for anyone's shelves, because the mods included that information on the team spreadsheet, so unless you change your shelf from the one you gave when you filled in the form, you don't need to link it =)

Wren, since you are new, if you have any questions feel free to ask!

This year it seems we won't have a post read books thread. So me and Lexi are working on a planning spreadsheet for everyone to update with the planned books and read books. If you are a slow reader, like me, make sure that you don't claim more letters/books that you can read.

I just downloaded it. I thought why not? It’s really short I’ll give it a try how bad could it be? Hopefully better than “the book” hahaha What do I need to do to join the group?
On another note I don’t have Internet right now. My internet went out during an electrical storm on Sunday and I’ve been fighting with the stupid company to come and fix it. I’m hopeful they’ll get it fixed today.

message 41: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments I’d also like an invite to the back room. This is not what I typically read in romance but I’m willing to see how it is. Thanks for letting us know it was free on kindle.

message 42: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4341 comments Elen, you are good on reading and using letters in cyrillic.

Also, for those who want to do the back room BOM, you have to request to join the group here - https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...

Nope, the only difference can be singular / plural. Classic or classics.
