Deanna | 3556 comments Hey team! Welcome to Wheel o' Brown (aka WAT IV - the Cat edition). It's almost time to read! The challenge kicks off Friday 6/14 at 8am London time (3am EST for those of us in the US.)

I'm Deanna. I live in Virginia with DH, 4 kids, 4 cats, a dog, and a few chickens. I love reading a variety of genres; but my favorites tend to be fantasy, science fiction, and mysteries. I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone.

To get started please introduce yourself (only as much as you are comfortable with). If you haven't yet created a shelf for this game (I'm guilty of this), please do so. Then post the shelf link here in the thread.

Challenge rules are linked in post five. If you have any questions after reading them, just let us know.

Steph Ann | 66 comments Hi, everyone! My name is Steph. I live in Illinois with my husband and 3 boys. My boys are 4, 3, and 2, so they keep me on my toes, lol. Reading and video games offer me a way to relax from the chaos that comes with having 3 kids under the age of 5. My favorite genres include Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, and Fantasy. I love team challenges and can't wait to get started!

Here's my shelf: WheelOBrown

message 14: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 66 comments Also, Ilona Andrews is one of my favorite authors, so I'm loving our team name!

Jackie | 2165 comments Hi, everyone! My name is Jackie and I live in North Carolina. I have three grown children. I'm retired but do work some. I'll read almost anything but my favorites are fantasy, mystery, and historical fiction. I'm looking forward to getting started.

My shelf: WheelOBrown

Erin | 615 comments Hey everyone! My name's Erin, and I live in the Bay Area in California- currently melting because I'm not used to this type of hot weather anymore! I work in a bakery, and then pick up extra shifts bartending. I like to read a little bit of everything, but mainly fiction- usually fiction, ya and whatever Liane Moriarty would be considered.

My Shelf: Wheel-a-thon-Brown

message 21: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Good Morning. I'm Mary, I'm in the US in Massachusetts so on EST.

I too am a big Ilona Andrews fan but have not started this series yet. I'm sure I will soon.

I'm lucky in that I can read and listen to audio books at work quite often. I read a wide variety of stuff. Not a big LBGT or New Adult fan so you might not get many bonus points for genre from me if those get called. But I'll do my best to help with the other genres. Although I'll take New Adult of YA so I might do OK with that one.

Getting remarried in October.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments And yes, I am in the Captain's Group.

I don't remember what I named my shelf on the sign up so here's the one I just made:
Wheel IV

Also I work on a computer all day and it's pretty easy for me to do spreadsheet updating.

Deanna | 3556 comments Welcome Erin!

message 25: by Deanna (new)

Deanna | 3556 comments 📚Time to scour those shelves for books!📚

Our word for week 1 is COFFEE, which has Suspense for the genre.

message 26: by Mary X (last edited Jun 12, 2019 07:27AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Oh yay! We got the word. Now I can see which Right Side Up books I should save for after Friday.

I just looked up the time when it officially starts: 3pm on my time on Friday. I was hoping it would be earlier. I work by myself on Fridays and generally listen to an audio book a large chunk of the day. But I'll use the time this week to finish up any non-Wheel books I have started.

ETA: nice. 4 of my remaining Right side up books work for at least 1 letter and the genre.

message 27: by Erin (new)

Erin | 615 comments Nice! Suspense and memoir are probably the genres I have the most books for

message 28: by Mary X (last edited Jun 12, 2019 10:00AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I like memoirs but I don't think I have any on hand. I might be scrambling to find available library books if we get that one. I'll have the same issue if we get LGBT.

I have suspense, classic and shifter books up the wazoo.

message 29: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 66 comments Shifter, adventure, and horror will probably be the easiest for me. Memoir and LGBT will be tricky.

message 30: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 66 comments Looks like the only letter I don't have is O. Other than that, I can take any letter. As far as page count goes, I do have a 1,000 page book that would work for E and matches the genre as well. That would most likely be the only book for me for the week though, lol. It would be a big point-getter, though.

message 31: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I've got one for each letter. Unfortunately, 3 of my planned books only have 1 obvious letter. I'm hoping they'll have more once I'm reading them. One has no obvious letters and I might try and get that one read beforehand. Unless I can preview it on Amazon and spot a name that works.

message 32: by Erin (new)

Erin | 615 comments I used to volunteer at this library bookstore, and all the books were so cheap if anything looked interesting I’d get it- so I have all these memoirs sitting on my shelves. No idea if they’re any good!

Almost nothing that fits shifters or space odyssey though

message 33: by Deanna (new)

Deanna | 3556 comments Erin wrote: "I used to volunteer at this library bookstore, and all the books were so cheap if anything looked interesting I’d get it- so I have all these memoirs sitting on my shelves. No idea if they’re any g..."

I love shifter books and space opera but would have a harder time finding memoirs. I tend to go with YA books if I need something tagged horror. It's been awhile since I read the All Creatures Great and Small series, so I could use those for memoir. LGBT would be hardest for me.

message 34: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments A lot of urban fantasy is tagged horror. I have a couple horror audio books if needed. Or read a Stephen King. He's not my favorite but my fiance loves him and it makes him happy when i reead him.

message 35: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 2165 comments Memoirs are not my favorites either. I tend to read YA books for horror as well, Deanna.

I've got books scheduled to read next that work for C, E, and F. Only one has the suspense tag on the first page though.

message 36: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments We can only get the bonus points for genre on 10 books anyway. So we should be good most weeks unless we hit a genre that no one on the team reads but we can always vote about doing a new spin.

message 37: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I actually feel really lucky with this call. Because of Right Side Up, I have my next 6 books planned out so this is my least flexible week. After that I will just read according to the calls for the most part. Hopefully any long waited library books and my real life book club books will fit in

message 38: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments So just started an audio book. Within first 5 minutes a name that works for this pops up. I use Amazon search and the character is in there a lot. So cool. Of course it's been shelved like 20 variations of "suspense" but not once as just "suspense".

I'm going to put it aside anyway and start a different one that is shelved for suspense but has no obvious letters.

message 39: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 2165 comments Do we have to wait until the challenge begins to start a book? I'm currently reading two that fit the letters.

message 40: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Yes we do. That's why I stopped that one I started where the name popped up right away. I don't mind restarting it after only hearing a few minutes.

Once it's started, if you start a book for one word and don't finish in time, you can finish it the next week and use it for any letters it works for the new word. We just can't bank any books like they've allowed in previous rounds.

message 41: by Mary X (last edited Jun 13, 2019 06:01AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Shoot. I have to check my books again for genre. I just double checked and it has to be in the top 100.
ETA: still good. Only the one I had just checked to see doesn't have it on the first page. But it works for F so I'll save it for this game anyway.

message 42: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Gah! I don't know what to listen to today. All my upcoming books have at least 1 letter in them. I have 7 lined up. 4 work for suspense.

I guess I'll just listen to the historical romance one. Only 1 obvious letter and no genre.

message 43: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 66 comments I finished a book this morning and felt lost, not wanting to start something new in case it would work for a letter, lol. So I'm reading Diamond Fire (Hidden Legacy, #3.5) by Ilona Andrews since it's short and will at least give me something to read for today. I can't go the whole day without reading something!

message 44: by Ashlee (last edited Jun 13, 2019 08:55AM) (new)

Ashlee | 645 comments Hi Team! I am Ashlee and I live in Pennsylvania. I am a special education teacher who is loving having the summer vacation to read, read, read.

My shelf is https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

I'm going to have to spend some time today updating my books read, since I haven't updated since April . :/

message 45: by Ashlee (new)

Ashlee | 645 comments I am going to be starting Something in the Water by Catherine Steadman and 2nd Chance (Women's Murder Club, #2) by James Patterson on Friday. Both of these books have suspense as a tag.

message 46: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 2165 comments I have a question about this book that I plan to start tomorrow.

Magic Graves Magic Graves (Night Huntress, #4.5; Kate Daniels, #0.5) by Jeaniene Frost

It's 162 pages so it fits the page count. It contains two novellas, one by Jeaniene Frost and one by Ilona Andrews. Since there are two authors, I'm assuming that either one can be used for the spellout, and Jeaniene Frost is listed first. So I should be able to use it for F, right?

message 47: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I know I feel like I am wasting a letter with the historical romance I just started. But since it doesn't have the genre, I figured I'd sacrifice it over the others. Plus I have 7 books to finish by the 21st if I want to keep my Right Side Up ranking. I can't waste a day.

message 48: by Mary X (last edited Jun 13, 2019 10:12AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments You can use letters from both authors and stories as long as you read both. Obviously we only use the book once per read, but you can get the letters from anywhere in the book. Just list whichever ones apply when you finish and we'll find a spot for it.

message 49: by Deanna (new)

Deanna | 3556 comments All right team. The planning spreadsheet is ready for books. Sorry it took so long. My parents are up visiting through tomorrow.

Planning Spreadsheet

Anyone comfortable with spreadsheets can enter their own books. If you don't have access to Google spreadsheets, just post the books here, and Mary or I can transfer them over.

When completing books if you are adding to the spreadsheet, just post a quick note here (ie. Finished xyz - spreadsheet updated). If you'd like someone to add the book for you, we need the following information in your post.

Book:
Author:
Date read:
No. of pages:
Genre or BOM:
Possible letters:

For example:
Book: Chains of Command
Author: Marko Kloos
Date read: 6/15
No. of pages: 386
Genre or BOM: Suspense
Possible letters: Title C, Series: Frontlines

Let me know if you have any questions. I'll check the thread first thing in the morning and then should be around more after my company leaves around lunch time.
