I found this one really divided readers. Looking forward to hearing what this group think of it. Sadly, it wasn't for me. I really disliked 90+% of the characters in the book. Previously I would have said that didn't matter as you don't have to like people to find them fascinating to read about, but perhaps that's not the case for me.
I read this way back in 2017 and, even now, I remember I had to keep putting it down to have a good, hard ponder about the events happening in the book. I rated it four stars - I enjoyed it, but wasn't enamored by it.
I really enjoyed the topics of this book and the reversed perspective it takes gave me a lot to think about. So I would definitely recommend this book, even if it has its flaws in the story itself, into which I never felt really involved, despite of some particular parts of it.
I got into trouble with Naomi Alderman when I posted to the Guardian book page column Tips and Links. I didn’t like it much and she objected saying that in that case I should just read something else. I was highly embarrassed because I’ve loved her other books. Disobedience is one of my favourite novels. I might give this another go at some point this year.
This book was out of my comfort zone. Not a genre I read very much and also disturbing subject matter. I flew through it. Each time I put it down it would leave me with a lot to think about. I’m still thinking about it days later.
Certainly a thought-provoking read but there were times I felt that the message of the book was a bit "on the nose". For example in the fictional letters at the start and end of the book between Naomi and Neil. The purpose of these seemed to be to tell us the themes of the book and let us know what we should be thinking and discussing about them. This grated on me as it should not be necessary to do this if you have dealt with your topic and concept well enough in the story.
