When Mrs. O’Neill shows up at the Malloy home seeking help for her jailed daughter, Maeve makes the decision to do some investigating. Did she really do it because she believed the woman was a friend of Alma Malloy’s or her own desire to play detective?

I think she wanted to play detective. Many times she gets to hear about Frank and Sarah's murder investigations. I bet she was a bit bored waiting for them to get back to the city.

But I do believe she was worried about Una being railroaded into jail for something she didn't do. She knows the police aren't worried about finding the real culprit. They just want to close the case with an arrest.

I think it was a bit of both and agree she was bored, too. Maeve got excited about the prospect of investigating and helping a friend of Mrs. Malloy.

I also think she was bored and seized the opportunity to investigate because she wants to be a PI.

That probably was the stronger urge.
