New Member Introductions - Autumn 2014
Hi David and welcome. Do come in and make yourself at home. And say hello to the rest of our fine collection of Davids.
Hi everyone,I found this group when looking for author information (especially Amazon related) and was thrilled to find that there is an author zone (without promo, yay!).
I'm an expat American living in Germany and most of my 'live' connections in the writing world are in the UK and Ireland. It's a tough place to get a leg in - or even a toe - so I'm interested in what UK people read and what writers talk about - especially Kindle related things since most of my book purchases these days are Kindle books.
I read voraciously (mostly speculative fiction but sometimes pop culture and memoir and a whole lot of nonfiction), and post reviews fairly regularly and am very interested in what other people have to say about what they've read.
I haven't joined many GR groups and have stayed a member in even fewer (off to quit one right now), but I'm confident this one will be a good one for me.
(Bangs microphone, everyone holds their ears). Sorry, I'm rambling. Thanks for letting me in here. :)
Hi there, I'm Julia Bell and new to this group. I've joined six other groups over the last months so I've decided I'm going to have to do night duty to keep up with all the conversations.

Hi everyone.Im Anne, I am a newbie to this group. I have a few books on the go right now. Love hearing about what others are reading, this is how I discovered Rivers of London, which is what I am reading at the moment and hoping to finish this weekend ready for the next one in the series.
Hi, I joined a while ago and have just been lurking about quietly. Hmmm let's see, I'm female, fast approaching mid 30's, I live in the North East of England. I enjoy reading a variety of books; including but not limited to True Crime, Crime fiction, paranormal, sci-fi/fantasy, biographies/autobiographies and chick-lit. I also enjoy photography, word games/puzzles, hidden object games, quizzes, movies, nature programmes, listening to music & listening to/watching waves hit the beach.

I'm an expat American ..."
Welcome, Sharon. Like you, I was pleased to find a Kindle group with a UK focus. The American ebook scene is very well geared up, being of longer standing, but quite often the blog-posts and Twitter-feeds don't quite fit with the experience of the UK publishing scene. Hope you stick around longer here than with those other groups!
Welcome, Northernbaygirl. I hope the Kindle solves the page turning troubles. I love my Kindle as it's so easy to take around with me and, late at night, I turn the font up!This is a friendly group and I hope you enjoy your time on here.
And a belated welcome to Jim, Sharon, Anne and Julie and any other newbies I've missed.
Thanks for the welcomes folks :) pretty much any name works as long as it's not offensive ;) - lol Anna, I'm a bit of an insomniac so may have to employ that trick when the eyes are bleary but I can't sleep. I've actually read a book in 2 days this week (which is about my old speed of reading) I've just bought another clip on light for late night reading as the one I already had is rubbish and I don't like to read too much on my tablet as I get frequent migraines and don't want to add another trigger.
Some times it takes a while to find out what works best for us but at least we have lots of toys to play with now! I take a long time to read a really good book because I savour the words and picture the scenery, so I'm hopeless in terms of reading challenges.
I probably would be these days too, my mind wanders off too much (I'm sure I've got adult onset ADD or something) < not 100% serious with that :)
Hi Jack, I had to read Of Mice and Men for school, way back. But luckily it was a double volume with Cannery Row which is a brilliant book and I loved :-)
Hi Jack, and welcome. I don't think you'll find too many fitness fanatics hanging around here. Interests lie more in coffee, cake, bacon and booze - but occasionally a book may get a mention.
Morning all, I'm Paul Hughes and I'm new to this site and am still navigating my way through it so I do hope I'm in the right place. I will be brief as I posted a not so brief post in the author thread if you want to have a nosey at that. I do have a book on Kindle at present - Daniel and The Dead (a bit of a supernatural coming of age thriller with gangsters and ghosts in it) and I have lots of plans to add more (crime fiction) in the near future. I'm from Manchester, live in Lancashire now, like reading and writing crime and fantasy - anything, really - and am currently spending most of my time driving buses (for my sins) and changing nappies. Self publishing is all brand new to me and a bit of a minefield so any advice would be gratefully appreciated!
One more thing. I'm not here to promote bomb my stuff and disappear. I do like to discuss lots of things and my interests are many. Like ale...and pies...and cheese...
Cheese! Now you have my attention. Pies I will happily consume. Ale not so much, but you'll find plenty of other enthusiasts...Oh, and hello and welcome.
Thank you all. Ginger lily, I am somewhat suspicious that you like cheese and pies but don't like ale. All three go together so well. All this ale talk is making me thirsty, David. Always nice to meet a fellow Manc, Kath and Patti, I did wonder about baconater.
All these people who say they're gonna be contributing yet never seen again.Hmmm
What can we do to make our group more welcoming?
We want you!
Don't worry about it, Patti - it's just the way of the world. The vast majority of new members didn't join because they need a virtual social life; they joined as part of their efforts to publicise their books. I chat on another booky forum that has over 15,000 registered members, but is kept ticking over by a very small core of regular posters. We all understand why. Writing, editing and publishing a 100,000-word novel is a huge commitment of time and energy that has to be fitted around job, family, and home. Once that novel is published the problem becomes even worse as they then have to find the time to promote the first one while writing the next. It's impossible to give that amount of time to a project without other aspects of their lives suffering.
They are desperate to have their work read and appreciated, if only to prove to themselves, their family and their friends that their time hasn't been wasted. So they join loads of Goodreads Groups and forums to give their book(s) a quick, free plug.
I don't blame them in the slightest. Even the smell of bacon sandwiches and coffee that hangs around this Group, and the amiable chat, can't persuade them to stay - they just don't have the time.

Welcome to the group, introduce yourself and get your sun cream out.
If you are struggling to get round our site try Group Quick Start
Please start by adding a post to our ‘Introduce Yourself ‘ thread. We are a nosey lot and would love to know who you are, what you like to read (and write), where you live and what you drink, eat, wear and grow.
This thread meanders off-topic quite a bit but as soon as a new member comes along our friendly but bonkers members soon appear to give you a warm welcome.
Of course you don’t have to introduce yourself if you prefer.
Getting started is often a bit of a problem. Try our Group Quick Start for tips.
Many people just stick to reading the Unread Threads
Section. You can even mark everything as read and start with an empty list.
You could head off to Meet The Authors check out the New releases or play some Group Games.
The Author Zone is going great guns. This is not just for authors by any means but gives them a place where they can talk about publishing challenges and resources. It is a no-promo zone!
Even if you don’t feel ready to post something you are most welcome to sit back and watch the fun.
This forum is very lightly moderated (hardly noticeable), occasionally we will ask you to keep a particular thread on topic and we have a few simple rules about author threads and new releases.
If you have any problems you can post questions on the threads or visit our Agony Aunt and someone will come along and help. If you would rather not ask your question publicly by all means send a personal message (PM) to Patti or myself and we will try to help.
I archive this section from time to time, so if you want a conversation that isn't going to disappear, feel free to use any of the existing threads or start your own.
