Let's discuss!

Harrison Freuck (hfreuck61) I read through this book so quickly, I never even got the chance to write in any of the chapter sections, so that should be telling of what I thought of this book. I thought Atwood's writing was very engaging and I was hooked from the get-go. Offred is one of the most interesting narrators that I can remember from a dystopian novel, considering she never seems to enjoy living in this world but she also refuses to do anything more than small disobedient tasks. Her relationship with her Clmmander, Fred, was also interesting because like her outlook on the world as a whole, she doesn't like him but she still is obedient and follows his rules. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I can't wait to watch the show/read Atwood's new book!! 9/10

Brittani | 14 comments I read this book within two days, wow.

From the beginning I was hooked with the way this story was written. I was so excited to see Moira come back into the story- short lived however. I was happy that Offred was able to see her daughter, which gave her that hope (picture or not). I wish we knew what had happen to Luke.
The thought of society becoming this way, is quite scary but yet eye opening. Although the end was a little disturbing with the Salvaging; it’s all about keeping with their new norms and making sure people still know there is a higher power in a sense.
After reading this, I am absolutely going to start watching the TV show!
I highly recommend this book! 9.5/10

Melissa Espana (mlespana) | 2 comments I finished this book so quickly! I made the mistake of watching the show first, though. I definitely regret that now. I think I would have appreciated the book more had I not seen the show. But I do find the character of Offred interesting. She's not a particularly strong character, which we usually see in dystopians. She's just kind of...there. Hating the world she's living in but not DOING anything. Just little acts of rebellion here and there. I wish the book was longer. I really did want to know for sure if she was pregnant and wanted to see more of what happened to her.

Katherine Ast | 16 comments Intriguing book. At first I found it surprising that Offred continued the meetings with Nick at great risk to herself and him, but then I wasn’t surprised at all when I realized that her actions just reinforced how important relationships and connection are in any society.

Atwood is one of my favorite writers. I read this in a day the first time I read it. I agree that Offred was a very interesting character because dystopian protagonists are typically rebellious. I like to think that was Atwood's way of showing that change can come over time from the smallest of actions.

The show is amazing and Atwood regularly consulted on it. You can see her influence in every episode!

When I realized that this book was published in 1985, it was chilling to think about the things Atwood got right about where our current world could head.

I cannot wait for the sequel! I hope it answers the questions left at the end of the book. I love the show and it makes me wonder how close the sequel will be to it because Atwood consulted on the show.

We will absolutely do a group read of the sequel! I read today that the confidentiality agreement the Booker Prize group had to sign was crazy because of how secretive they have kept the plot. I'm so glad she wrote a sequel and can't help but wonder how much she is going to address about our current world. She has been very outspoken about the treatment of women, politics, etc.

Sally Durbin | 16 comments Just finished and wow! What a great read! I definitely agree that Offred is not your typical dystopian protagonist! I’m definitely going to have to check out the show now! And I really hope The Testaments gives us more on what happened after the end of this book! The ending definitely left me wanting more!

William Stanger (wcs53) | 28 comments I really enjoyed this one a lot more than I thought I would. I haven’t decided if I’m going to watch the TV version yet or not, but I am going to pre-order The Testaments for sure. Hopefully it will answer a lot of the questions that arose in my mind after I finished this one.
