Interesting. What the the article didn’t mention was that if you hold a small mirror against the painting at exactly the right angle, that the thing at the borrow is clearly seen as a skull.
Hmmm, at the bottom there is a little quiz where they show a close up of a well-known painting and you have to guess the artist. It is really very easy and I got all but two. I was a bit intimidated that I even missed those two so I’m sure any or all of you more well-versed in art would get 100%. Check it out if you have a minute....
I also missed two Heather, the Japanese guy and the African American. And without the text I would have missed more ;-)
Not easy these close ups!
Here is a link for a short (7min) video about the painting in which they show the skull:https://www.khanacademy.org/humanitie...
Yes, I missed the African-American and the textile artist (and I think I should have known those!) I believe we discussed the African-American artist not too many months ago in our Guess Who Biography thread, too.Well, you make me feel a little better, Dirk, thank you! Lol
And thank you for posting that link!

There's often far more encoded in a canvas than first meets the eye. One of the great joys of looking at historical art is trying to unravel the intentions of the artist and decipher the meanings these works would have had in their day. Here we put 5 of history's great masterpieces under the microscope.
