Sci-Fi Group Book Club discussion

This will be a busy travel month for me, but I am hoping to be able to read this book along with the group as it has been on my wish list for years.

Is this travel for work or for vacation? Hopefully, you'll get to read The Forever War all the same.

It's a vacation. Going to Toronto for a few weeks, which should be a lot of fun.

Cool! I hope you have a good time there! I've only ever been in the airport there (in between flights) so I intend to visit it properly some day.

I tried reading his but almost gave up at the 20% mark when it got slightly more interesting. I finally gave up for good at about 25% in. I was born in 1947 and I m a Vietnam ERA vet which means I served my time on Okinawa at a communications site instead of going to Vietnam.

Maybe I didn't read enough but I didn't pick up the Vietnam allegory idea that everybody refers to. There are many comparisons made to Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" which I actually liked better (gave it 3 stars).

Sorry to hear you didn't like it Jim. I never read Starship Troopers though I saw the film. it's hard to believe that was made over 20 years ago now!

Just wondering at the radio silence here - a number of people chose this book. Aside from Jim, has anybody else had a chance to read The Forever War and, if so, what are your thoughts?

I did not manage to get through this book in July, unfortunately. I started reading it a few times, but never got drawn into it and ended up putting it aside for other books I wanted to read. I'll come back to it at some point, but it didn't peak my interest this time around.

I read this book about ten years ago when I first got into sci-fi. As I remember it was a rollicking good read with some interesting concepts. It reminds me of classic sci-fi, where the characters don't really develop but world that was created was very interesting and well thought out.

What does Mandella mean when he says the aliens don't have a cure for relativity?

So far I'd say is an okay read.
