Peter doesn’t want him to visit because he “tortures him”. But the old man just visits because peter lives alone and he wants to check on him. Peters dad was in the war and he was never the same when he came back. Peters sister left the small town for NYC. I only read a sample of it and didn’t get to even finish the sample. I can’t remember the title or the author but it seemed like a great book.

The elderly man was a janitor at the school that Peter and his sister attended. His sister was always alone and at the nurses office I think. This is probably as far as I got in the book.
