Karen Ruffles (drawingindark) | 6 comments Hi folks,
worked with an author recently on an illustrated anthology and have run into problems formatting the ebook. When I had the images professionally copied, there was an issue with reflection showing- didn't effect the prints but was visible on screen. That meant we got the print version done through Ingram as planned but instead of the ebook being converted by them, I had to re-edit the pictures so they looked perfect on screen and poor Sean has been driving himself crackers trying to format the ebook version so it can be submitted separately.

I was just wondering if anyone here had good experience of using such a programme and if there's one anyone would recommend (or to avoid). I think he's worked most of the kinks out now but this seemed like a good place to ask in case not, before he actually explodes. I'll build a little list of tips based on our experience thus far and post them when we've successfully released this one into the wild.

Thank you :)

Amanda Byrd | 5 comments When I had issues, I used a guy on Fiverr called Bookwrangler. He's great, affordable, and super fast turnaround. I can't use InDesign for ebooks for cat poo right now. Lately I've been using Calibre, but don't use photos, so I can't offer any tips there.

Karen Ruffles (drawingindark) | 6 comments Thanks for your input Amanda :)

Posting our solution back here in case anyone else has image issues. The problem turned out to be the software compressing the images with each translation so what we ended up with was first blurry, then blurry and really small by the time we got to mobi. We had someone work on the images to prevent that happening - the alternative would have been adding in the original images again for each file type.

A cautionary note also - not all readers displayed all the issues, the reduction in quality was obvious but the rescaling only showed on my Kindle app for Android. For Sean and test readers, that didn't happen. So be sure to check your books on as many devices and using as many programmes as possible before you unleash it on the world!
