Hello, everyone.

The easiest task for me is author of 7 or more books.

message 5: by Bookworm_gem (new)

Bookworm_gem (gembear) | 314 comments hey team!

I'd be happy with a book with at least 9 characters or authors debut novel.

any team name ideas?!?

I like Blazing Bookworns a lot.

Wishbear | 393 comments Hi Everyone, finally checking in. It was a busy weekend.

I can't check the spreadsheet until I get home as I'm blocked from Google at work.

I like Blazing Bookworms.

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

I have 9 John Grisham books on my shelf right now so I’m certain that it will fit the task.

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

LAVA spell it out.

The Tattooist of Auschwitz has a character whose name starts with L and was a prior BOM.

Another book that would work is Leah on the Offbeat.

message 11: by Wishbear (new)

Wishbear | 393 comments I've updated the spreadsheet with our books read per month and the countdown tasks that Gemma & Slytherpuff wanted.

according to the member tab, if we read our max books, we will read 16 books per round.

I'm going to hold off choosing my books until closer to the challenge start. I have no troubles reading for difficult tasks and often read a book just because it fits a challenge (this is why, if you ever look at my book shelf, I have so many 1 and 2 star rated books. I've ended up with more than a few duds)

I don't understand how lines 29 down on the members tab of the spreadsheet work so i'll leave that to someone else.

Excited to get started but it sucks it is still 3 weeks away.

I think the best bet is to start with one or two countdown tasks each. This would mean that the faster readers do more tasks and will get it done faster.

As I saw on another teams thread they considered during zone 1 and 3. For 3, we could do short words.

Remember we have to finish countdown tasks before starting any safezone books. Safezones can be read in any order as long as one safezone is finished before the others. Zone 3 is broad so it seems best to do one of the other zones first. Plus, we can start books for another safezone but can’t finish it until the other safezone is finished.

The only books that count are ones started after the date.

As we are on the lowest level, I think doing Safezone 1 and 3 are the best bet.

What do you think?

message 14: by Bookworm_gem (new)

Bookworm_gem (gembear) | 314 comments agreed 1 and 3 make most sense in my opinion and like you say depending on how we're doing we can stick to short words to complete what we can..

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

We just started the challenge! Have to wrap up one book today and will start my first book tomorrow.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

Do you have access to the spreadsheet?

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

Want to post here? I can add it when I get a chance

message 18: by Wishbear (last edited Aug 14, 2019 11:10PM) (new)

Wishbear | 393 comments Whoops, I'm late to the party. I forgot to figure out my books before I left for a mini vacation. I've filled in 3 books that I should have finished by end of day Monday.

We still need:
A Book published on the 10th of the month; OR has 4 narrators (The Help works for either task) and
A Book that is #6 in the series.
to finish the countdown

I have a couple in mind for #6 in a series but I don't want to claim anymore books until I've finished what I've claimed.

message 19: by Wishbear (new)

Wishbear | 393 comments So a book I've had on hold was just auto checked out to me and it has 4 narrators. It's an audio book so I'll have it finsihed Tuesday.

The only countdown task left is A Book that is #6 in the series.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

Awesome! I’m 50 percent through my first book

message 21: by Wishbear (new)

Wishbear | 393 comments So THIS was posted in the last 12 hours or so.

We have until 9 a.m. Monday (Melbourn Austrailia time) or 2 days & 10 hours (as of this posting) to finish all 10 of our countdown books or we lose points.

I don't know about y'all but I didn't understand that when I read the rules. According to the mods, the amount of time to finish the countdown will vary during each round.

I'm going to get off the computer now and hopefuly get through a book tonight. I hope everyone's books are coming along

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

I’ll try my best to get finished with it tomorrow but I’m not sure I’ll be able too.

message 23: by Bookworm_gem (new)

Bookworm_gem (gembear) | 314 comments I've finished my first book and updated the spreadsheet - do you want me to do a completion post here too?

message 24: by Wishbear (new)

Wishbear | 393 comments I don't think a completion post is necessary, the mods said in the q & a that they weren't looking at them as long as we keep the spreadsheet updated

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

I’m going to do as much as I can tonight plus I have a decent amount of free time in the afternoon tomorrow

message 26: by Wishbear (new)

Wishbear | 393 comments once the countdown timer runs out 6 and a half hours from now, we have a couple options.

1) we can finish our countdown books for 10 pts each.

2) we can switch our unfinished countdown books to the safe zone tasks without penalty. however, if we put them in zone 3, we can't finish the book until we are finished the books for zone 1.

im voting for option 2 as the minimum# of points for the safezone is 30 pts per letter. as opposed to 10 points per countdown task. however, if we don't finish a word, we lose 50 points.

I'm wondering if we should skip zone 1 & 2 this round and just focus on little spell it out words in zone 3.

I'm open to whatever everyone else wants.

Isn't this molten stunning?

Unfortunately, you are in MOLTEN and have failed to complete the countdown tasks before our countdown.

This means you have been sprayed with some hot lava and lose 10 points for each book in the countdown stage not completed.

You can chose to finish your countdown books during this round for the 10 points per book, OR you can move straight on to the SafeZone groups for the 30+ points per book...

If you have a book in progress for Countdown, but didn't finish it before the Countdown hit zero then you can use that book for the SafeZone - no penalties will accrue in that instance only, but the timing constraints of the SafeZones will apply (i.e. if you use it for SafeZone 3, make sure you finish it only after you have completed SafeZone 1 and/or 2)

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

Mollie that sounds like a good strategy.

message 29: by Wishbear (new)

Wishbear | 393 comments I was looking at the words (any word from the countdown tasks) and six would give us 120 points. I have a book that works for x. I'm not sure what other words/letters anyone is willing to read for

message 30: by Bookworm_gem (new)

Bookworm_gem (gembear) | 314 comments I have a book that works for S if someone else could take I?

I can take the I

message 33: by Wishbear (new)

Wishbear | 393 comments Gemma wrote: "I've had a look and we're not doing very well on the leaderboard ;) oops haha"

No we aren't but that's okay. We can strategize better with Round 2 and hopefully pull back up, or we'll just hang out in the middle of the pack but, hopefully, we will still be having fun.

message 34: by Wishbear (new)

Wishbear | 393 comments I will have the "I" book finished tomorrow morning.

I've added WHO to the spreadsheet for spellout. I'm reading a "W" for a different challenge, have an "O" on deck after the "I" book. I can take the H as well but if someone else wants it, let me know. Alternatively, if you want to read for T, we can spell out TWO instead.

I don't know who is reading what right now other than Gemma for "s" If you have books you know will finish in time, let me know, and I can read for words that will fit your letters.

With all the books we have read + the two spellout words, that's only 11 books. So we can read for 9 more letters. I'm not sure how many more letters I can commit to but I'll do my best.

message 35: by Wishbear (new)

Wishbear | 393 comments Also, Round 2 tasks are now posted in the spreadsheet.

message 36: by Wishbear (new)

Wishbear | 393 comments I just scrolled back through, and I see that Myriam's book that she is reading for Task 2, also works for "H" so we can use that to finish spelling out WHO.

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

Wishbear | 393 comments This was posted last night regarding regenerating points in Round 2:

goodreads.com/topic/show/19969237-rea...

You can regenerate any damage caused in two ways (you can chose to use one, both or neither method):
1) Participate in a BOM by (a) writing DQ set: gain 30 points OR (b) getting involved in the discussion: gain 15 points (note that these do not stack - you can't claim for (a) and (b))
2) Build a ladder of at least 4 connecting books - gain 50 points; with additional 10 points for each additional book in the ladder.

☣BOM participation points gained in Round 1 can be can be claimed in Round 2 (ditto for Rounds 3 & 4).
☣Books used in the ladder do NOT need to be different books to what you are using in your countdown or safezone tasks. ☣Note that the timing constraints will still apply (you can't use a book in the Safe Zones before the Countdown has finished etc).
☣You do not have to read ladder books in order.
☣All regeneration points gained will be applied.
☣All books used in regeneration count towards your total books read.
☣You can regenerate either all the points you have lost in injuries OR up to a cap of 175 regeneration points, whichever is the lower. (i.e. if you have lost 180 points, you can only regenerate 175; if you lost 80 points, you can only claim 80 regeneration points)

message 40: by Wishbear (new)

Wishbear | 393 comments I can participate in the Discussion for Good Omens which will give us 15 points. Has anyone else read the book and can join in?

message 41: by Wishbear (last edited Aug 21, 2019 01:49PM) (new)

Wishbear | 393 comments thanks for checking in Myriam. It's so fun how real life likes to get in the way of our reading. I hope your renovations are going/went well.

My Lady Jane is the book I was referring too above as it will work for an H as the author's last name is Hand. But we can use it in a new word, too. What is the H book you will have completed? Maybe it will have other letters that we can play with.

I have O covered and Gemma is working on S.

As for the rules, I'm just kind of winging it as we go. I think we are going to have about a week to get the countdown tasks completed. Then we focus on the safezones. Our word for 2nd round Safezone #1 is ACID. I don't see why we can't get that one read for before moving on to the Safezone 3 spellout tasks.

For the regeneration tasks next round, I'll just go through the books that we have read and make a book chain to max our regeneration points.

For spellout words this round, I'm just trying to make little words with big points. I'll work on it this weekend after we get more books (hopefully) and I might change the words. Although WHO & SIX are pretty much max points so they won't change.

TWO would be a good word to try to spell out for if we can find the letters. I have books that will fit all three letters, I just can't guarantee right now that I can get them all read by Sunday night.

Wishbear | 393 comments Myriam wrote: "For the word TWO I will have finish : The Case Against Sugar by Gary Taubes by Friday.

And I'm sorry but I can't update the spreadsheet"

That's great, thanks. I'll update your books if you want to do completion posts in here.
Book, Author, Date Read and any letters that work. We can use character first & last names and Narrator First & Last names along with Title & Author

Agreed Myriam - i'm not quite sure what the rules are haha

Wishbear | 393 comments Gemma wrote: "...Agreed Myriam - i'm not quite sure what the rules are haha "

As long as you read the books, I can do the strategizing and keep y'all aprized of what we need to make our books fit the rules :-)

I think the biggest thing to keep in mind, that wasn't clear in the inital rules, is that we really only have a week to get the Countdown tasks completed.

What else are we needing before Sunday?

oh for sure. If everyone can choose their books as early as possible, it will maximize our reading time come Monday.

Great Gemma. We need another O or we can start a new word if O is hard for you to find. I have a book that works for O but I'm not married to reading it and don't want to be a letter hog.

message 49: by Wishbear (new)

Wishbear | 393 comments In the Q & A, the mods have requested that we link the book title in the spreadsheet to make it easier for them to check the books.

Here is Cat, Browneyed Girl's explanation: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

by Cat, Brown Eyed Girl 23 minutes ago
Cat (cat_uk) | 4242 commentsDevann wrote: "is it okay if we shelve the default edition but link to the 'correct' edition in the spreadsheet if it affects the task in some way?"

So, when we (I, at least, I can't speak for the other mods) do checks, we are going to go by the book linked in the sheet. If there's no link, we'll do a search (and grumble loudly), and use the default.

If you've linked a book, we assume that is the one you read and are using to fit the task, and will assess it's merits accordingly. So: if you link to a kindle ed and claim a narrator name: we'll penalise you; if you link to a blue ed and claim it's red: we'll penalise you.

If we search for it: (1) we'll just use the default edition, which may or may not work and (2) won't guarantee we'll find the right book.

Other mods may be kinder / more diligent than I, but I wouldn't rely on it, and strongly urge teams to double-check that the book linked (and ideally shelved) fits the task requirements!

Oh, and if we penalise you & you request a 3rd umpire review, we'll likely look at what's been shelved too, and use that info in any decision-making chatter..."

I will go through the spreadsheet tonight and link all the books but please double check the spreadsheet tomorrow or Sunday to make sure that I used the correct edition that works for your task.
