Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13450 comments Ohhhh, can I do task #2? I've a classic sci fi I've been dying to read by Arkady Strugatsky and Boris Strugatsky.

I can put that one aside for this challenge. hehe...

Tina ❣ (nutrinut) | 2014 comments Ooooh I can do any audiobook tasks

I think I'd struggle with3. How can we know that an author planned for 3 and then wrote more?
I think Charlaine Harris and Richelle Mead planned for less and then wrote more but I don't know if they planned for a trilogy....

Douglas Adams The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy would work :)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13450 comments Task 10 is trickier in the UK, as they only print year, not month or day here, though there could be some cross-referencing with Goodreads if it doesn't have to be that exact version. (I've come up against that task before when it had to be the version we were reading that was published on a certain date. Almost couldn't complete the task, until I lucked upon a copy of a book that was sent to me from the states with amazingly the date I needed in it! lol)

Emma (M) | 1777 comments To make it easier, I have the tasks listed below and I can update this post with each of our preferred tasks as we find appropriate books. We have nearly three weeks until the first round, so plenty of planning time.

10 first published on the 10th of a month Emma
9 with at least nine characters (need to have a speaking part, do not need to be main characters) Emma
8 that has a carnivorous animal on the cover Tina
7 written by an author who has published at least seven books (as listed on Goodreads) Lisa
6 that is number six in the series Emma
5 that was first published in the 1950s Lisa
4 where the audio version has at least four narrators Tina
3 that is part of what was originally a planned trilogy, but became a longer series (can include .5 books added later) Sammy
2 that has two authors (as credited on Goodreads) Sammy
1 which is the author's debut novel Tina

Did you want task 4 Tina?

message 13: by Emma (M) (new)

Emma (M) | 1777 comments I reckon I can find a book for number 9.

message 14: by Sammy (last edited Jul 22, 2019 05:57AM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13450 comments Good idea Emma.

So to get max points, we first need to complete the countdown ( 2 books each, & 2 read an extra) = 10 books

Then we complete the next two stages, followed by a two letter word from the countdown questions for the final stage to make it up to the full 20 books (extra points if we pick one of the words with an I or O in it).

message 15: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13450 comments OR we could choose to skip task 1 (I think?) And do any 6 letter word (or a 2 and a 4 letter words or somesuch) from task 3 instead.

I think I'm interpreting the rules correctly, lol.

message 16: by Lisa - (Aussie Girl) (last edited Jul 22, 2019 10:01AM) (new)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6495 comments Hello fellow babes,

yes, great photo.

I too can do No 9 there are 13 characters listed on the blurb. Die For Me (Romantic Suspense, #7; Daniel Vartanian, #1) by Karen Rose and it also fits No 7.

message 17: by Lisa - (Aussie Girl) (last edited Jul 22, 2019 10:11AM) (new)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6495 comments Yes, No 3 is tricky.

The only series I can come up with is Anne Bishops The Others. It was originally a trilogy then went to 5 books and then there is a sort of spin off. I've read the first five but I haven't read the last spin off, I'll see if that is still categorised under The Others.

ETA - So I checked and Wild Country (The World of the Others, #2; The Others, #7) by Anne Bishop is categorised on Goodreads as World of the Others 2 and The Others #7 - so do you think I could read that for Task 3?

message 18: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13450 comments I'm happy to take on task 3 if no-one has anything they want to read from it. I've still the last book in the Hitch-hikers series to read (which even says on the cover it's a trilogy in five parts, lol).

You can take that one then, Sammy.

Instead I'll take No 5 - First published in the 1950's

The Sixth Wife (Tudor Saga, #7) by Jean Plaidy First published in 1953.

And No 7 - more than 7 books on goodreads Die For Me (Romantic Suspense, #7; Daniel Vartanian, #1) by Karen Rose

message 23: by Sammy (last edited Aug 09, 2019 07:21AM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13450 comments Ok ladies, I've been doing some working out...

After the countdown, we can do any or all of the three tasks. I vote we ignore task 1, as it's as low for points as it's possible to get.

Task 2 is the highest point-wise, but very tricky to complete (especially the one with lava in the text for those of us who don't use a kindle...). It's worth it for the points, but only if we can complete all 4 books. (200 points)

Task 3 is the easiest, but can also be great for points. I've worked out the words that will give us the most points...

If we complete task 2, we can read 6 more books to max out our category. the best words to use are six and not. (task 2 + 3 = 430 points)
If we ignore task 2, we have 10 letters to read, our highest scoring options being Six, not, by and on. (390 points)

Of course, it does mean one of us will have to find an X...

We should probably also see who is reading how many books per week! I was down for two, so 4 in the fortnight round. I can read an extra if needed, but would appreciate a heads-up, lol.

Sammy- 5 per fortnight
Lisa - 5 per fortnight
Tina - 5
Emma - 5

Total: 20/20 (I can update this comment with totals as they're posted, so we can easily see where we are.

Thoughts?

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6495 comments Great doing the sums Sammy.

I can read 5 books in a fortnight. I'm sure one of us gals can rustle up an X somewhere.

How are we going for allocating the first top ten.

Looks like we have the following to be read for -

1. Author's debut novel
8. Carnivorous animal on cover
10. Read a book first published on the 10th of the month

For the countdown I think 2 books each, plus those reading the most doing an extra would work, unless someone is reading a really chunky one for the countdown, and others can read smaller ones faster?

Tina ❣ (nutrinut) | 2014 comments I’m cool with whatever guys.

I think I’ll be able to mange 2-3 books

I definitely have an X somewhere and I can take 1 and/or 8

is that 2-3 per week or fortnight Tina?

message 28: by Emma (M) (new)

Emma (M) | 1777 comments Good work on the sums Sammy! I can probably pull off 5 books per fortnight if I go for shorter books.

Per week me thinks. It depends on how much uni homework I have to do for the week

message 30: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13450 comments Shall I put you down for 5 in the fortnight then?

message 31: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13450 comments To make life easier, I'm also down for 5, so that puts us all on the same reading amount.

Next big question... Are we going for the second task or not? I'm happy either way, but finding books that fit may be difficult.
I for one definitely don't have anything to fit number 3 & 4, but can look for 1 & 2 (not holding my breath though, lol)

message 32: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13450 comments I have books for both 1 & 2 for task 2...

Hopefully I won't have to look for too long

message 36: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13450 comments Actually, Pale Fire also works for the 3rd one, so I definitely can read any one of the options for task two needed.

If you gals can rustle up the other 3 between you, we can go for max points in round 1! :D

message 37: by Tina ❣ (new)

Tina ❣ (nutrinut) | 2014 comments I just had a quick look and have books for 3 and 4 on my kindle.
I'll look in my other apps tomorrow for 1 and 2 :P

Hi Tina, I’ve put against 1 and 8 for the countdown, which gives you three books in the countdown let me know if that’s doable for you?

message 39: by Emma (M) (last edited Aug 09, 2019 11:14PM) (new)

Emma (M) | 1777 comments I’ll find a book for number 10 in the countdown so that will be all countdown books covered.

I should be able to find books to cover any of the task 2 requirements.

message 40: by Sammy (last edited Aug 10, 2019 09:42AM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13450 comments Awesome! so in that case, Tina and Emma will be reading 3 books for the countdown and two for the task stage, (one task two and one spell it out for task three)
and Lisa and I will read two for the countdown and three for the tasks (one for task two and two for task three)

Do any of you have editing access to the spreadsheet yet? I sent a message to the mods the other day, so hopefully they'll get around to approving it soon.

In the meantime, our task three letters are:

S - Lisa
I - Sammy
X - Tina

N - Lisa
O - Sammy
T

Tina said she had an X, so put her down for that. There's two left for Lisa, and one for Emma. Pick your letters ladies! :)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6495 comments Can I take the N and the S.

So what do I have to do/find for task 2?

See what you can find. I think the rest of us can cover any of them, so if there's any you can't do, we can accommodate. :)

message 43: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13450 comments Emma, are you ok with the T for task 3? I can swap for the I if needed, but I'm guessing T is easier? :)

message 44: by Tina ❣ (new)

Tina ❣ (nutrinut) | 2014 comments I'm happy with what I've been given. I've got my books chosen for them all.

I asked in the 'ask the volcanologist' thread about how we can edit our sheets
