Trim the TBR—August Planning and Reporting
My #16 is B.A. Paris' The Breakdown!! Which is pretty awesome because I expect it will be a quick, fun thriller. Nothing heavy, just a nice light chocolate shake of a novel. It is published in the 21st century so I am gonna have to say it fits the tag this month!
Malevil by Robert Merle - dystopian novel repeatedly recommended to me ages ago by a friend. Long OOP, it is fortunately available in ebook to read for free from an online resource (or it would not have been on my Trim list!), and I am delighted to get this push to read it.It also might fit 21st Century as it is the aftermath of nuclear war. We will see.
It's The Golden Age of Murder for me! It's tagged 21st century on page 3 but I don't classify it as such as it takes place between the wars!
I've been wanting to read a Nora Roberts book next and my number 16 turns out to be her Tribute. Looking forward to it!
Woot! Bless the two people who tagged A Local Habitation as 21st century! And it's one I actually own, as opposed to July's, which neither I nor my library own (I had an e-arc, which was how it got to my TBR).
Double WOOT from me Every Heart a Doorway-tagged as 21st Century by 16 people, also MPG has LBGT so I can use it on my SRC challenge!!
Nileema wrote: "I've been wanting to read a Nora Roberts book next and my number 16 turns out to be her Tribute. Looking forward to it!"This is a solid book by Nora and is also the subject of a super cheesy Lifetime movie featuring Brittany Murphy! I think there are 8 or 9 total Nora Lifetime movies and they are so wonderfully cheesy. lol
Amy wrote: "I have the doorstopper the Invisible Bridge. At least its the oldest on my TBR and I own it!"Have this one on my TBR too-look forward to your thoughts-I got lucky this month, mine is only 170 pages!
Someone is reading this with me. I think I had Rachel reading it with me too, but I actually think there is a buddy read for this one with someone else as well. Maybe even two more. Reveal yourself - because I need you! I was half dreading this one. Except that it fulfills two other challenges too. (Owned and 1st and oldest on TBR).
Joanne wrote: "Double WOOT from me Every Heart a Doorway-tagged as 21st Century by 16 people, also MPG has LBGT so I can use it on my SRC challenge!!"Oh, you're in for such a treat with Every Heart a Doorway.
Amy wrote: "Someone is reading this with me. I think I had Rachel reading it with me too, but I actually think there is a buddy read for this one with someone else as well. Maybe even two more. Reveal yourself..."Hi Amy! We're reading buddies this month! I'll be reading The Invisible Bridge with you. I added it as #16 on my list in July because it came highly recommended last year when I asked about books set in Budapest. I don't actually own this one, but have requested the book and audiobook from the library. Fingers crossed the audiobook comes in time since this is over 600 pages :-)
My #16 is If I'd Killed Him When I Met Him.... It was published in the 1990's so it won't fit the tag. I just hope it's better than July's book which I've nearly finished and it is awful.

Good to know!
My #16 is The Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon. I stopped reading this series about nine years ago because it was such a huge time commitment. But now I'm retired, just landed in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to dog sit for my brother (who has a pool) until August 11 , and it looks like I can probably fit it in perfectly. It's 1456 pages and is actually #1 on my 1245 book TBR!
Olivermagnus wrote: "My #16 is The Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon. I stopped reading this series about nine years ago because it was such a huge time commitment. But now I'm retired, just land..."Oh so jealous-about the pool and the dog😀
Amy wrote: "I have the doorstopper the Invisible Bridge. At least its the oldest on my TBR and I own it!"Amy, I think we planned to read this together, as it is my number 16 as well. I'm not sure if anyone else is in. It has been on my tbr for a while.
Edited to say, I see that Doughgirl is in the group read as well.
My #16 is The Book Thief which has been sitting unread on my shelf for... 10 years... why? I have no idea. But trim the tbr is hopefully the push i need to read it. I am still on my June book though, but that and my July book is packed and ready in my bag; I have the next three weeks off work, and tomorrow we´re going to my father´s house by the seaside :). Later we are going to a summer house in another part of the country, also by the seaside (lots of coast in Denmark).
Olivermagnus wrote: "My #16 is The Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon. I stopped reading this series about nine years ago because it was such a huge time commitment. But now I'm retired, just land..."I am reading the book after that one, A Breath of Snow and Ashes next month! We can be Outlander reading buddies ;)

Luckiest Girl Alive for me, which 10 people have tagged. The "Girl" theme is definitely one of the 21st century, lol. Happy to have another psychological thriller for my Summer Reading.
annapi wrote: "My #16 is The Tsar of Love and Techno, and darn it! Doesn't fit the tag."It certainly was written in the 21st century and it seems like some of it happened then as well.
My #16 is The Brothers K by David James Duncan. Several friends have given it good reviews, so I am looking forward to reading it. Unfortunately, it does not fit the tag.
Doughgirl and BnB - here we go! I was actually hoping it would get picked at some point, because i wouldn't have otherwise picked it up. But Lord am I intimidated! It better be good! Looking forward to sharing this one with you. People have loved it! Rachel would have been the fourth. I miss her. Its probably not going to be my first book in August. I'll need to knock off some other things as well. We will have to connect and see when you guys are starting it.
This must be the month when most people managed to align the tag with the trim...I didn't have a chance.
there were 0 books on my Trim list from the 21 century... (or witches or holidays for that matter)
Ah well. I'm deep in early 20 century with colonialism... with A Passage to India by EM Forster
Cora wrote: "My #16 is NOS4A2 and it has been tagged 21st century, so that works out nicely."I LOVE THIS BOOK!! Hope you like it... the TV series started a couple months or so ago also.

Amy wrote: "Doughgirl and BnB - here we go! I was actually hoping it would get picked at some point, because i wouldn't have otherwise picked it up. But Lord am I intimidated! It better be good! Looking forwar..."I won't be able to start it until after 8/1. I'm waiting for the book and audio to come in at the library. Is someone going to set up a group read thread? I've never been part of a group read before. Excited!
Amy wrote: "I will set it up DG. So we can keep each other posted about where we are and what we’re thinking."Thanks, Amy. If everyone else is up to it. I could start reading in early August. It would be good to get it out of the way and then move to something else.
I am sure you are going to love it, Amy. I checked and many people whose judgement I trust have read it and rated it highly.
Thanks Joanne. The weather is warm and sunny right now so enjoying that. You never know when it turns to rain and colder weather, such are the summers in these parts, but if you are prepared with books and board games a little rain is not bad :)
I don't even know why I have this book, but my #16 is "Veronika Decides to Die". It doesn't sound like something I would normally read, so here's hoping!

I just checked, and you're right, thank you! Nine people tagged it 21st century, so I'm good!
Olivermagnus wrote: "My #16 is The Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon. I stopped reading this series about nine years ago because it was such a huge time commitment. But now I'm retired, just land..."Oh, what a perfect time to read this! I envy you.
Hooray! My #16 book is A Rule Against Murder, an Inspector Gamache novel. I love this series by Louise Penny! This is number 4, I'm way behind in the series but that's OK. Seven people have tagged it 21st Century!

"I liked this even more than The Song of Achilles. It's really good as an audio too.
My # 16 is The Flight of the Maidens by Jane Gardam. It's been tagged 21st Century Fiction
Will that count? Or does it have to be exactly "21st Century" with no other qualifier?

"Liked this more than Song Of Achilles - found it more powerful. Hope you enjoy it.
I got Cold Kill: Monkeewrench Book 7 which should fit the 21st Century tag and will be a fast read. P.J. Tracy books are always fast paced and full of action but certainly not literary masterpieces.Well that sucks in the 6 pages of things it has been shelved as 21st Century is not one of them. Hmmm
BC—to get the extra points for this challenge, it must be the exact tag with no qualifiers. So, unfortunately, 21st Century Fiction will not work. BUT, that will count for the regular monthly tag, so out your review in the monthly tag folder and you will at least get the points there!

Head to your list that you posted in your personal challenge tracking thread, find your 16th book, and get your hands on it! Reading cannot start until August 1, but this gives you a few days to get it physically in your possession.
Feel free to post here what your 16th book is if you want to see if anyone else is reading it, but this is absolutely not required!
Once August 1st hits, then you can post your reviews here when you complete your book. Reviews must be at least 4 sentences long. Other things to include if it fits:
• Fits the August tag of 21st Century.
• Page length of the book.
Still working on your previous books? You can post your review here when you finish, but please label it clearly as your, e.g., #19-January book!
A note on page lengths:
To keep this fair, the official page count will be the hardcover edition OR, if there was no hardcover version, the format that the book was first published in. You can find these numbers on the book details page here on GR or you can also find them on Amazon.
This means your page length you are reporting only for this challenge may not EXACTLY match the edition you read, but it is the best way we can keep things even in the age where mass market paperback editions can have many more pages than other versions. This page length applies to audiobooks as well.
A reminder of the scoring:
• Read your book - 3 points
• Your completed book happens to fit the tag (must be tagged as such on GR) - 2 points (plus you'll get an additional 2 for posting your review in the Monthly Tag folder)
• Read the longest book among all people who completed their randomly assigned book in any given month - 5 points
• Read the most pages in any quarter (up to 3 books total and quarters are Jan-Mar, April-June, Jul-Sept, and Oct-Dec) - 25 points
• Read the most pages for the whole year (up to 12 books total) - 100 points
• Read the most books that fit a tag for the year - 25 points (totally random luck, but still fun!)
A note for people who start the challenge after January 1:
Whenever you join, if you want to participate in the current month, then Anita or I will randomize your list as described above, locking in the book for that month as well as the books for all previous months (exact number depending on when you join). Then, you can have the random number for the next month is announced to rearrange the order of the remaining books to align with any buddy reads or just going with your gut instincts!
Once the random number for the next month is announced, your list is locked and you cannot change it until our mid-year shake-up!
This seems like the best way for people to jump in at any point while still keeping things as fair as possible.
Reminder of numbers:
January: 19
February: 17
March: 34
April: 12
May: 24
June: 30
July: 23
August: 16
