The Best Of... discussion

I enjoy experimental writing styles and deviations that make sense creatively, but when a writer relies on or uses a style as a gimmick for their book, it makes me cringe. One of my earth-based book groups has selected an upcoming book, "The House of Leaves," that sounds from the description like one of these gimmick books. I'll probably pass on that reading.

I've got a copy of that, picked up out of the free book bin at Edward McKay several months ago.

I haven't read it yet. There always seems to be something more interesting I want to read.

And yes, there is a true difference between a writer's style and gimmickery.

But gimmicks sell. It's telling that the souvenirs and stuff sold at pro-wrestling events, as well as each wrester's costume and unique (or not so) mannerisms are known as his or her "gimmick."
