Books and Jams Readalong discussion

Hi friends! Thanks for letting me take a break in July. It was nice to not have much of a tbr and just read however my moods hit me during the month. Of course, that's after my trip to Turkey (#shamelessplug - If you haven't seen my vlog on my Youtube channel you totally should!)

BUT we are back to it this month reading a big ole book - Pachinko! I was on the fence for a while about wanting to read this one, but after hearing Min Jin Lee speak at the National Book Festival I definitely want to read it. Did you know Pachinko is a game? I am also very curious to read about the racial issues between South Koreans and Japanese and Korean/Japanese. It may not be a fast read, but I think it will be a good one.

Who is here reading along this month? What have you heard about this book? Why have you wanted to read it? Or maybe why have you put it off?

I will be reading Pachinko and joining in on Austen August. I have a book that has several of her books in it so have several to chose from.

I am also joining this read and Austin August.

Okay, I have already read Pachinko and I looked in my book journal to see how many stars I gave it......4 1/2. (That is pretty good for me.)

When I read it I learned a lot about Korean culture and how the Japanese looked down at the Koreans.

I have had Pachinko sitting on my shelf for months and I'm excited to start reading! I'm not sure why I let it sit, unread, for so long...probably because it's kind of a chunk, haha! I will also be participating in Austen August, but haven't decided what I'll be reading. :-)

I’m here for the Pachinko read-along! I am Korean, but don’t know a whole lot about my culture because I was adopted by an American family when I was only 4 weeks old and grew up in Southern California. Think it will teach me a thing or two about my heritage! Excited to be a part of a reading group too! First time! 😀

I've had this book for a year, so it's time! Just started two days ago, and I'm already on page 100. It's really good so far!

I had read half of it last year for a book club I belonged to but I changed to a different book club during that month. So I’ve got to skim the first half to catch up to what I read but glad I have a great reason to pick it back up.
Also planning on joining Austen August I have Longbourn, which is told from the point of view from the Bennett household servants. Should be fun!

Already finished it which is great since I’m doing the NEWT readathon this month! 👍🏻 curious to see other people’s responses to it...

I've read Longbourn and really enjoyed it!

I’ve been stalking Krista’s readalong threads for a while now and want to join when the right combination of book and time came along. I wasn’t going to join this time as I don’t have a copy of the book and the library situation is unhelpful (four copies in entire HK system and always checked out! 😂). BUT, just checked Kindle store this morning and it was $6.61!! So, despite my determination to read what I already own (or from library), seems rude not to buy it...😉🤓📚😂
It’s a hefty ole tome so I’ll see how I go but, either way, looking forward to keeping up with the comments here - if not the page count!
Finishing up my current read today or tomorrow, and then I shall begin.

Still deciding whether to join this month. I have the book but it's just not calling to me. I may read my next Carrie Bebris book for Austin August. A mystery series based on the Austin books.

That sounds interesting! I haven't heard of Carrie Bebris before.

I'll be joining in. I have requested both the physical book and audio from my library. Its "in transit" so hopefully I can start reading soon. This will be my first read along so I'm looking forward to the experience. I'm also going to participate in Austen August. I've never read Austen for pleasure, always "required reading " in school. I've picked up a Pride and Prejudice retelling. ELIGIBLE by Curtis Sittenfeld.

I will be joining the readalong this month. I am really excited for this book because it sounds very interesting.
I learned that Pachinko was a game from my 14 year old nephew when I showed him what I was planning to read 😄😄
I will join #austenaugust with definitely one book (Sandition) and if time permits one more, most probably an Austin retelling 😊

Saw comment above from Bernadette (I think that’s correct...iPad only shows BERNA) but just wanted to add apparently Sanditon is going to be on PBS later this year/beginning 2020. Can’t recall specific date if they showed one in Masterpiece newsletter. Should be good!

I’m joining in. I’ve had this on my shelf long enough. I’m also very interested in books based in Japan as my son lives there with his Japanese wife.

Hi Kim! It is actually just Berna. I am from Turkey and it is a Turkish name but I would like to have a fancy name like Bernadette :)

Thanks for the reminder about the tv series. I will definitely try to watch it.

I've got my book and Happy to say I got it at a library book sale for a $1. :D
