October Challenge - Scottish Thrillers
Has to be Ian Rankin for me! No one quite says Scotland to me like he does and I have a stack of his Rebus novels waiting to be read :)
I bought a whole lot second hand but don't have them all so I'll have to scrummage around in my book stash before I post my choices :)
Not a huge fan of thrillers or Scottish noir so I am going to read a book by a Scottish author that is set in 1920s Scotland. It is:
After the Armistice Ball by. Catriona McPherson. This is the first in a series so if I like it I have a heap more to get through :)
I have chosen
The Blackhouse by Peter May;
Natural Causes and
The Book of Souls both by James Oswald (which are books #1 & #2 in a series)
Not sure if I'll get them all read, but I'll give it a go:)

I think they've won some awards - or at least nominated :)
I'm going to catch up on some of the Hamish Macbeth series by M.C Beaton. I think I am up to
Death of a Chimney Sweep
I'm trying to decide whether to go with Ian Rankin or Alex Gray. I've never read either of them before, or do I continue the Jackson Brodie series I've just started by Kate Atkinson?
I'm going to read Knots and Crosses. Apparently its a dvd series too according to the library. But I'll stick with the book for this one.

I haven't heard of Gordon Ferris James, thanks:) I notice The Hanging Shed is the first of the series...

It may surprise many of you but I am a huge Val McDermid fan. Haven't read her for a few years but she is not a light and fluffy writer yet still love her!
Start with The Mermaids Singing. Is the first book in the Tony Hill and Carol Jordan series - fabulous series.

Ah - Tony Hill. Remember when they televised The Wire In The Blood with Robson Green as Tony?

I watched and enjoyed "Wire in the Blood' series. Not sure I could read the books after watching the show. Other way round perhaps.
Is everyone primed and ready to start this challenge in a few hours? Have fun and enjoy your Scottish thrillers:)
Hi there - just joined this group and Brenda mentioned the Challenge. Having just started Saints of the Shadow Bible by Ian Rankin, one of my favourite authors - I suppose I must be in the challenge.

I read the first one years ago :)

I've just started my book for this challenge Strip Jack by Ian Rankin, the 4th in his Rebus series.I've read some of the later ones, mainly because I picked them up in second hand book shops, but have been enjoying going back and reading the early ones I missed.
Also try Lennox series by Craig Rusell set in Glasgow and Cold Granite by Stuart Macbride set in Aberdeen.
Really enjoy Stuart MacBride and the poor put upon Logan McRae and the rather marvellous DI Steel. Doesn't spare on the detail though does he? At times a bit gruesome but with a dose of good humour. Good choice.
I haven't started my book
After the Armistice Ball by. Catriona McPherson yet. I have a couple of ARCs to get out of the way - then I'll be onto it :)
Really enjoyed reading one of Ian Rankin's early Rebus novels Strip Jack 4★. I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed his books. review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Will try to read at least one more before the end of the month!
@ James and Halcyon Stuart MacBride sounds good too if I can squeeze in another author for the challenge.
I finished an Ian Rankin book too. Mine was The Black Book. It was very good.

Cold Granite is the first in the series Carolyn - set in Aberdeen so perfect for the October challenge. He also has a good website - www.stuartmacbride.com. I sent him a comment when I first read Cold Granite saying how much I enjoyed it and he sent me an email back which I thought was pretty good!

Thanks Halcyon - just checked it out on Amazon and the Kindle version of Cold Granite is free! So it's now happily sitting on my iPad! *Happy Dance*
