For our October challenge, we will look at THRILLERS either set in Scotland, or written by a Scottish author. If you like, take your choice from your TBR to help with its reduction!

The challenge will run from 1st October 2014 - 31st October 2014.

When you have decided what you'd like to read, put your choice here in this thread, as it may help others decide - like a recommendation of sorts!

Some links to help you choose:

Scottish Noir
Scottish Mysteries
Scotland Mysteries

Settle back and enjoy the read!

Carolyn | 2119 comments Has to be Ian Rankin for me! No one quite says Scotland to me like he does and I have a stack of his Rebus novels waiting to be read :)

Excellent Carolyn:) I'll be interested to see your choices..

message 4: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn | 2119 comments I bought a whole lot second hand but don't have them all so I'll have to scrummage around in my book stash before I post my choices :)

Sounds good!

message 6: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 Not a huge fan of thrillers or Scottish noir so I am going to read a book by a Scottish author that is set in 1920s Scotland.

It is: After the Armistice Ball (Dandy Gilver, #1) by Catriona McPherson After the Armistice Ball by. Catriona McPherson.

This is the first in a series so if I like it I have a heap more to get through :)

I have chosen The Blackhouse (Lewis Trilogy, #1) by Peter May The Blackhouse by Peter May;
Natural Causes (Inspector McLean, #1) by James Oswald Natural Causes and The Book of Souls (Inspector McLean, #2) by James Oswald The Book of Souls both by James Oswald (which are books #1 & #2 in a series)

Not sure if I'll get them all read, but I'll give it a go:)

Those last two have a paranormal theme. Good reading friend of mine loved them but advised me not to read them as she knows how squeamish I am. She gave the first one 5 out of 5 even though she nearly threw up reading the first chapter :)

I think they've won some awards - or at least nominated :)

message 17: by Brenda, Suspense lover! (new)

Brenda | 12106 comments Mod
Maybe go with one of each Kerri;)

message 18: by Kadi (new)

Kadi (kads) | 69 comments I'm going to read Knots and Crosses. Apparently its a dvd series too according to the library. But I'll stick with the book for this one.

Ah - Tony Hill. Remember when they televised The Wire In The Blood with Robson Green as Tony?

message 32: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 Absolutely. And he nailed it! I know 'see' him when I read the series.

message 33: by Peter (new)

Peter Stankovic | 109 comments I watched and enjoyed "Wire in the Blood' series. Not sure I could read the books after watching the show. Other way round perhaps.

Hi Sally - yes it is his latest Rebus - I would suggest reading the series in order as the stories and the character development are interlinked across the books. :)

Carolyn | 2119 comments I've just started my book for this challenge Strip Jack by Ian Rankin, the 4th in his Rebus series.

I've read some of the later ones, mainly because I picked them up in second hand book shops, but have been enjoying going back and reading the early ones I missed.

message 42: by Brenda, Suspense lover! (new)

Brenda | 12106 comments Mod
Enjoy Carolyn:)

message 43: by Jim (new)

Jim (toppie) Also try Lennox series by Craig Rusell set in Glasgow and Cold Granite by Stuart Macbride set in Aberdeen.

message 44: by HalcyonDaze (new)

HalcyonDaze | 17 comments Really enjoy Stuart MacBride and the poor put upon Logan McRae and the rather marvellous DI Steel. Doesn't spare on the detail though does he? At times a bit gruesome but with a dose of good humour. Good choice.

message 45: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 I haven't started my book After the Armistice Ball (Dandy Gilver, #1) by Catriona McPherson After the Armistice Ball by. Catriona McPherson yet.

I have a couple of ARCs to get out of the way - then I'll be onto it :)

Cold Granite is the first in the series Carolyn - set in Aberdeen so perfect for the October challenge. He also has a good website - www.stuartmacbride.com. I sent him a comment when I first read Cold Granite saying how much I enjoyed it and he sent me an email back which I thought was pretty good!

Thanks Halcyon - just checked it out on Amazon and the Kindle version of Cold Granite is free! So it's now happily sitting on my iPad! *Happy Dance*
